America has been in a collective foul mood since Election Day 2008. Some folks couldn't handle the fact that an African-American man was elected POTUS and that started a political schism that has only widened since that day. This was just the trigger for a lot of things to worsen the nation's mood.
The Internet - What should have been mankind's greatest communications tool and social equalizer morphed into a gross commercial clusterf**k based on creating division, envy, feelings of inadequacy, and associated stressors all for the profit of a handful of tech firms and media concerns. Even runners are not immunes as most use apps like Strava to keep score and rate themselves against others.
Politics - No need to get into this too deeply, but Americans that used to have a few small differences of opinion are now conditioned to see every little thing as a plot, a conspiracy, and a personal affront. The aforementioned online world gives fringe dwellers and kooks a huge megaphone and formerly relaxed people are conditioned to be angry and to have their fearful biases constantly confirmed.
The Pandemic - Never before has a population been locked down en masse quite like COVID. Equal parts frightening and necessary at first, it frayed nerves and gave rise to all manner of crazy. The lack of a cohesive national strategy and feuding political leadership made it last far longer than it should have and hurt many both economically and socially. Those effects are still being felt today.
Work from Home - While I am generally in favor, it creates a lot of stress by forcing families into close quarters with little to no separation from each other. It has also been abused to create a 24/7 work culture by some employers. That just amplifies little annoyances into major beefs because you don't get a break from them. It also hurts people that need office work as a social outlet and full weekends to refresh. A lot of domestic anger and marital failures have and will continue to happen as a result.
The OP is not alone in his feelings and is not an outlier. A lot of good advice has been shared on this thread, but I will strongly urge you to severely limit your Internet and media usage. Neither does much to broaden your mind and, I feel, it just creates an unhealthy atmosphere that makes you feel less of a person by comparison to the fake images that you see.
