For the 2nd time this week a random stranger tried to “race” me during my run today. I train around a 6:15-6:25 clip, not ridiculous but a quicker tempo than the hobby joggers & fitness bros who frequent the trails. While passing this random 45+ year old guy he took off from his roughly 8:30/9:00 pace and latched right on to me for about a quarter mile until he died out on the uphill.
I’m a 25 year old guy, wouldn’t it be a bit odd for a man of his age to try to befriend or socialize with a total stranger that way? Why do people do this, and how often does it happen to you? I personally find it annoying & childish but maybe I’m overreacting to some random dude just getting momentary inspiration to pick up the tempo.
Yep this has happened to me too!
I came off the high street onto a trail path and another trail joins it at the same time. I use the trail as a tempo session so I sped up and as I did the other guy sped up too. I was cruising behind him for around 1.5 miles whilst he was spitting to the side and breathing heavily unil he pulled up and I carried on.
Thankfully it has never happened since but some people legit have massive egos but when it comes to races they can't perform. You will notice a lot of people on strava now make their times private.
