I wouldn’t be so quick to bet against him. It wasn’t that long ago that people were saying he was too big for the 5k and would never compete with the Africans, and look at him now. I’m not saying he would win or even medal, but I think he would be competitive.
To be considered the goat distance runner Jakob needs to win world XC at least 3-4 times. Bekele, Geb, and Tergat dominated in XC, Track, and on the roads. That’s why they’re the three greatest distance runners of all time.
I'm a huge Geb fan but he never won world XC. Tergat dominated him in XC, and Geb dominated Tergat on the track.

I think last time Jakob ran World XC he placed 21st... in the Junior division.
He placed 12 on an extremely hilly course which favorized the East African lightweighters.

He is not built for XC at all, too heavy and he can't accelerate like the Ugandans. His MO is an even pace, winding it up imperceptibly on the track until everyone falls off.
He wins Euro XC because he is so much fitter than everyone here, not because he is particularly great at XC.

Mo Farah was an also-ran until age 28 when he joined a now banned coach and became unbeatable for the next 7 years. Add on his doorbell issue, association with Jama Aden and its not unreasonable to be suspicious of him
So what ? Jakob had a bad race 3 years ago. It can happen to anyone. Cheptegei also got "destroyed" at world XC according to let's runner standard. And he became world champion the following year. I am not saying that Jakob would be for sure world champ, actually I would favor the 5/ 10 k specialist like Cheptegei, Chelimo or Kipruto but he can definitely do better than that 12th place. Which is still pretty good for a Euro guy given that most "junior" african athletes are older than 21 ...

Katir ran well. He is an excellent rhythm runner who can also kick and it was good to see him in the race for XC. I expect more great things from him in the track 5,000/10,000, and eventually the HM/marathon.
