    Here are some facts and accolades on Boston State's and the GBTC's legendary coach Bill Squires. If you want greatest of all HS, College or Club, I nominate Bill Squires. In Boston we love Bill Squires for elevating the running community. There had been no legitimate or decent indoor track for HS or College but after the success of the GBTC the MA legislature then constructed the Reggie Lewis Track at Roxbury CC, then BU built their track and now New Balance has a phenomenal indoor world class track.... I credit all of this to the sacrifices of the GBTC, Jack MacDonald and Bill Squires.

    It's probably not hard to convince a few kids who would have to compete for a spot on an above average D1 team to instead drop to a quality D3 school and have a guaranteed spot on a guaranteed national champion. Much harder to out-recruit all the other top D1 schools who are gunning for the same top guys.

    The scholarship equation is one factor, and I think a major one which is why it was the first I pointed to. Also have to factor in total enrollment (D1 schools in general draw from much larger enrollments), prestige (talking both athletic and academic, thought that largely depends on the school), affordability, and several other factors.
