After checking times and comparing regions, what was up with the Central region? 18 people sub 30 is Kinda suspect
Course is notoriously short but it’s the same course every year so you can make comparisons and this is the fastest and deepest the central region has ever been.
You do not know how this system works at all. Adams just blocked the entire West Region with their win over Azusa. No one gets out of the west until Adams does since through second tier Adams and the rest of the south central 4-6 have wins over west #4.
At-large advancers in approximate order
1. Pitt State
2. Michigan Tech
3. Illinois Springfield
4. Alabama Huntsville
5. Lewis
6. Washburn
7. UCCS
8. West Texas A&M
This is where the computer must take over. South Central teams advance due to West Texas win over Northwood. What is tough is that Pueblo lost to East Central. But, Central Missouri lost to “everyone” during the season. Northwood and rest of Midwest have no wins. West is blocked by fact that Pueblo beat Adams and Adams beat Azusa who beat rest of the west. The last 2 bids will either belong to the Central or the South Central. Pueblo loss to East Central not as bad as Central Mo losses to S&T, SBU, Emporia, Hays, and Missouri Western. For this reason I think Pueblo and Adams get in on a committee decision. The season resume and human component of the selection committee will come into play. Adams also beat all RMAC at RMAC. So have UCCS and WT wins. Let the haters start to hate.

I am curious, do you have a spreadsheet or system in place to see all these results, wins, head to head competitions/etc? Do you look at all the TFRRS results and remember them all? Very comprehensive coverage, I appreciate all the feedback and analysis! It was a seriously WILD regional weekend for D2 as well as great national racing in the D1 ranks. Great weekend for XC fans across the board!
Why is D2 nationals so late in year? I don't ever remember it being after thanksgiving but what do I know.
D2 XC season is lengthened by 2 weeks while some other sports that are hosted at the same time are actually shortened. I believe the sports that are all hosted are M/W XC, Women's Volleyball, M/W Soccer, Women's field hocky. Everything will be in the Seattle area and all athletes stay in the same hotel with events that bring the student athletes together
It seemed like Adams men were trying to tempo at first/ go easy, and assumed the course would slow everyone down and they could pick people off in the later half. Dillon Powell of Mines of course did not do that and ran sub 30 (at 5200ft of altitude) on an accurate length course, stringing out the race and leaving Adams in the dust. The women saw that and then went harder, but did seem to struggle with their shoes. But I thought most of them were wearing spikes, just new balance spikes that were a bit more slick on the bottom. (The new balance super shoe spikes I think)
Also I would say that about 75% of the course was plowed (normal grass at that point). But the men had to do 4 laps of a 2k loop so that could have worn on them more.
The new balance super spike just has hard plastic for the outsole with 4 spikes that can’t change length. It didn’t do well in the snow from what I heard some saying. Their women didn’t do as well as they had been doing but still won, so I don’t think it’s just the spikes. Adams States men have been having a downturn since 2018 or thereabouts in cross country. Some good track times but not getting it done on the course. Their men looked like they weren’t really trying early on the race and then the next time I saw them around 8k they looked like they were just throwing pity parties out there. Their women are competitors. Their guys are time trailers.
It was a lot of fun watching results come in yesterday. Knowing what to look for as you see results is the key. Keeping some tabs open to keep track of the who beat who helps. For the record, CSUP might pick up all of the Central Mo losses unfortunately for them. So if it’s 100% computer formula, they do not advance. Same reason why none of the West advances because of Azusa losing to Adams and Simon Fraser losing to Western with Adams beating Western at RMAC. Two blocking points.
The NCAA will never release how the at-larges are selected. Last year a human component was used to advance the At-Large process as was done in 2018 as well. I believe 2017 & 2019 is the only year the formula has 100% produced the exact qualifiers based on data alone.

MSSU's XC courses are all VERY short. I have wheeled the 5k more than once and it is only 3 miles (4827m). The 10k is just the 5k twice but actually a little shorter even since the loop through to repeat the course is short of both the start and finish lines. So the 10k is shorter than 6 miles.
So as you can see, I am correct. A 6 mile course will come out to around 6.1 or so on most GPS watches and most of these show less than that. The course is no more than 6 miles and likely a little short of that.

It does have lots of turns and switchbacks. I would not call the course flat though. It is not hilly but it is rolling hills the whole way through. It produces fast times because it is short, not because it is "fast and flat".

Why is D2 nationals so late in year? I don't ever remember it being after thanksgiving but what do I know.
It would make sense. D2 is the second best collegiate championship after D1 so why share the spotlight? Take advantage of the post D1 euphoria and get real fans who are hungry for more and don't want the collegiate season to end.
