USA have waay too much poverty, and this is reflected by a high crime rate. Coming from the EU, I have seen, and lived in various EU countries, as well as in the US. In my experience, countries like Slovenia, Croatia, Czech republic, etc. are miles (kilometers) above the standard of living in the USA. Not to mention Austria or Switzerland.
Besides better infrastructure, cleaner surroundings, less obesity, better food (minus UK), you also feel safe, anywhere, anytime. Police is not funded above the charts, because it doesnt have to be. In USA you dont feel safe. Either there are some weirdos shouting at you, or you are just threatened by big loud cars and the lack of sidewalks.
Americans, stop this bipartisan thing. It's gonna be the end of the USA if the truth doesn't matter anymore and everything is seen in the light of Democrats vs Republicans.
I'm saying this as a Euro dude with a lot of sympathy for the USA.
And two, why wasn't this guy in jail ? People in the USA seem to think European people are softies, but in Europe this guy would've been in jail.
Euro Due, I get what you are saying. It's like Americans have allowed their 2 political parties to completely divide the country, and have convinced people that they are a Republican or Democrat first...rather than an American. The seem to blame every problem (economy, healthcare, homelessness, crime etc etc) on the Dems or Reps...as if it was a specific party that is responsible for all the issues. It incredible and sorry to watch from the outside.
There was a great clip from NewsRoom which said it very well.
This is a clip taken from the premiere episode of the American television political drama series "The Newsroom" created and principally written by Aaron Sork...
This is an awful crime and the criminal should go away for a long time. At the same time, this kind of reporting is extremely misleading. 90% of rapists are known to the victims, boyfriends, relatives, friends, acquaintances. Only 10% involve strangers.

I won’t deny your anecdotal experiences but the stats about median income, purchasing power parity, and population percentage below poverty don’t support your argument: about 9% of Americans are below the poverty line compared to over 21% in the EU.
The lack of universal health care is indeed more damning for poor people in the US, probably the single biggest hit against the US relative to Europe on the poverty front. I’ll grant that you are right about crime (and obesity but not necessarily cleaner surroundings and better infrastructure), but poverty can’t be the prime explanation.
Dems are fighting for her. They want her to be able to get an abortion if pregnant. That way no harm. He needs a free ride through life and women so he won’t do this in the future. Everybody wins in the Dem world this way. Just need the republicans to pay for it.
The two biggest factors to stay safe on a run are (a) light, and (b) other people being around. At 6 am, it was dark. And while it can get annoyingly busy on that path at certain times of the day, it can be quite desolate when it is dark. Both Memphis and now this happened when it was dark and unpopulated. It just gives weirdos like this guy too much of an opportunity to do evil.
As an aside, this is a big reason why they should NOT make daylight savings time permanent, or even have it go this far into the fall. If we were on standard time, it would have been light at 6 am and more people would likely have been on that path. Runners (especially women) and kids going to school need the extra hour of sun in the morning, not at the end of the day when most people are commuting home from work.
I run after work, not before. I want it light later, not earlier. AM running sucks.
I run along this path a few times a week and consider myself savvy but this story was scary. I don’t walk near the edge of the subway platform anymore. I keep my eyes and ears open and try to stay clear of people when its early or there aren’t tons of people around. I don’t even worry about being touched or having my ass grabbed because it’s not that big of a deal. But this poor woman was raped in public, and that is terrifying.
I live in a wealthy area of CA and this never happens. The gardeners are a little sketchy but prolly afraid I’m gonna check if they have a green card so they just look suspicious. Anyone else live in Irvine? Did 8 mi this morning in the dark and only saw a coyote. You guys all need better cities. Be like me 😀

Whatever the Dems are fighting for, the Repubs don't have a viable plan to bring down crime either.
I cant deny these numbers (a reference would be nice though), but you have to define poverty. In EU poverty is not (usually) an existence threatening condition. You have healthcare, in worst case your income is social funding (which some people take advantage of), you can rent an apartment, retire at 65, etc. It sucks, because middle class people go for two weeks to the seaside during summer, and for one week skiing in the winter. And you can only go to the seaside for a week, and have to shop on discount days. You complain, but very few people resort to crime.
In US maybe the absolute number of poor people is low(er), but in my experience, the crime rate is higher due to the type of poverty. Homicide rate in the US - 6.3 per 100k. Highest in EU: Lithuania 3.7. Normal for EU country: approx 1. (According to wikipedia). Of course USA is a big place and there are probably significant differences between each state, but the average kind of speaks for itself. If you are exiled from the rest of the society, then the rules of the society don't apply anymore.

Liar, liar pants on fire...
1...Aggressive policing/stop and frisk
2....stop the "no cash bail" nonsense
3...sack the progressive DA's who won't prosecute criminals
4...send criminals to prison where they can't hurt more people
5...stop early release of criminals
Democrats worship criminals, Republicans despise criminals and stand for order and law...pretty simple.
On the bright side. Just think about how much worse this could have been if the man had a hammer. Smart progressive policies protect our major cities!!!
