No sport ever says “if it’s on the scoreboard it has to be official.” There we’re non-binary athletes registered in advance, and if Bitter had asked, he would have known one was in his wife’s category.
Your argument is it’s not their responsibility to know anyone they’re competing against. If he didn’t ask in advance and didn’t wonder who the person was who was 5 minutes ahead of his wife, that’s his own fault.
You and Ellie Pell must be really fun at parties. Get a grip, bro. No one is trying to crucify the non-binary runner. But having a non-binary category is a pretty new concept, and it caused some confusion at Javelina. And that's fine. It's also fine for people to try to figure out how to improve the situation so it's less confusing next time. Deep breaths.
It really didn't. One guy was confused. Everyone else understood.
I have raced against Riley before and have always considered her as female. When she was running with me during JJ she stated that she was going after the GT here. All of her past results are considered female too.
I though registration forms had you select “sex” and not “gender”
Riley was 105 minutes behind the men’s leader. Riley placed 6th. Riley is still a male. There’s only a few sexes. There’s innumerable genders. I’ve seen 20-30 genders named. Why does non-binary get the checkbox? Non-binary has to be one of these least popular genders. Is Riley really bragging he won a race against himself?

Riley identifies as non-binary & following our policy, contacted our race director with their intentions to race for the golden ticket. We incorrectly had them in the non-binary division in our results & on social and have corrected the oversight. We apologize for the confusion.
My goodness. Beginning to think "not complcated" is actually Ellie Pell. NO SANE PERSON IS ATTACKING RILEY BRADY HERE. I'm sure there are a few fringy right-wing dudes out there, but you've got to stop allowing them to live rent free in your head.
The people who are asking questions are doing it TO TRY TO LEARN AND IMPROVE. Why are you polarizing this issue and pushing people away? Instead, try listening and answering with empathy. Assume people have positive intentions. Life is better that way.
These two things can both be true:
1. Riley Brady won a Golden Ticket. They should keep that Ticket and run in WSER. Congratulations, that's awesome!
2. As the race itself admitted, they did not categorize Riley correctly on the race tracker, and this led to confusion. RDs should try to improve and ensure that this is less confusing next time around.
You are trying to prove that no one was confused, but you literally posted tweets from (a) one person who says he was confused and (b) THE FREAKING RD of the race apologizing for confusion.
NO ONE IS TRYING TO TAKE THE GOLDEN TICKET AWAY FROM RILEY. But it was confusing, and it's in the best interest of the sport to clarify that confusion. That's it. Not very "complcated."
Given the situation, maybe the Western States race should just offer a third Golden Ticket to the 3rd place finisher. Brady still gets a ticket but so does the confused 3rd place finisher. Adding one extra slot to the race is not going to overload the field.

See how that works?
I mean, bulls$%t. Look at the title of the thread. the implication is that Riley changed genders once she realized she could win a Golden Ticket.
Nope. stop trying to put this on the race or RD. This is only coming up because Zack Bitter is pretending his wife would have run 30 minutes faster than she did 2 years ago, somehow, if she only knew Riley was beating her. Which is absurd.
Literally nobody else was confused here, and nothing needs to be fixed. Everyone knew who Riley was, and any self-respecting journalist should have understood how the WS qualification would resolve itself.
The absolute best way to be inclusive is to allow for self-identification while not allowing that self-identification to impact the result of the competition - in this case, the compeitition for the Golden Ticket. That's what happened. WSER is fine with it, JJ is fine with it, Riley is fine with it, and so am I.

Eric was confused. He's easily confused.
Zach was either lazy, ill-prepaed or disingeuous. He wasn't confused.
I've been dealing with this lately. The problem is chronic and always happen when I do more faster paces running. So I'm pretty sure it's not the result of a single trauma but in fact some way I'm running. I think I over stride a bit. I feel it mostly on hip flexion of the affected leg. I think it might be because I'm not extending enough on the opposite leg so my affected leg reaches out more, over-stretching that hamstring/glute unit. After several runs really focusing on extending that opposite leg my so called correction feels awkward. So maybe I am in the process of fixing it? I don't know. For the last couple of weeks I have been working with my laptop at a standing desk and sometimes lying prone when I can. I hope taking some tension off the posterior chain will be helpful. Any more success stories?

There is no situation. The right person got the Golden Ticket. Nicole Bitter was never going to catch Riley.
Give out an extra and you've started handing out non-binary Golden Tickets, and that door can't be shut again.
I'm pretty progressive on most things, including inclusivity for the trans/non-binary community. But this tweet is pretty aggressive. Probably something she'll look back on with embarrassment:

Not sure you understand that you are attacking potential allies. Totally unproductive. I'm just gonna leave you to it. Have fun in the echo chamber, and good luck out there in the real world.
I mean, back when I used to run, and particularly during very cold races, my male genitals would shrink up so small during the race it was almost like I didn't have any. Nowadays I'd say I'm a girl and I would have won at least 15 national titles and been the most decorated track athlete in NCAA history. Such a shame.

This is exactly what happened though: Someone (Riley Brady) in the non-binary category got a Golden Ticket.
How many competitors in the Women's category (And their crew/supporters/family/fans) actually knew during the race that Riley Brady was competing for a Golden Ticket under the Women's category also? All updates and live tracking and reporting omitted Brady as being a "Top 10 ranked Woman". So the race organization didn't even seem to know!

Incorrect. A biological female got the Golden Ticket. JJ doesn't give out the tickets; WSER does. They gave it to a female.
Kaci knew, and she finished 4th, so I'd be shocked if anyone else within shouting distance of a Golden Ticket didn't know. The raceknew.
I do appreciate how we're suddenly treating ultra broadcasts like the Super Bowl. They're usually Jamil, Billy, and Corrine, with a bunch of phone cameras that keep freezing, with tracking and commentary that goes something like "Freddy ran through Pilsner's Gulch 2 hours and 47 minutes ago, so he's either on record pace or he's been eaten by a mountain lion; we'll know in 4 hours when he gets to Klondike Porch," and now we're treating the broadcast and tracking like the Zapruder film.
Especially at Javelina. it's a FIVE-LOOP COURSE. There's no excuse for Zach not asking - if he didn't know - if the person ahead of his wife was beating her, as Riley ran past him FOUR TIMES.
By the way: it took about 12 seconds to find this: a scoreboard form the live bradcast with Riley in 2nd, and the announcers talknig about how Riley is ahead of Nicole and Brittany Peterson. So no - there wasn't any actual confusion here.

Well, to the casual viewer following the race for the entire day (and maybe to runners and crew), this is what appeared to happen because Riley wasn't in the leaderboard for the women's race all day, until after she finished. I don't think a reasonable person would actually accuse them of doing that, but at a quick glance, that could be how it looks.
None of this is Riley's fault though, since that's not at all what happened. The race admitted it was a mistake they made in the live results.
For sure, this is growing pains as races becoming more inclusive. I expect we'll see more clarity moving forward.

somehow, AJW knew Riley had a Golden Ticket as soon as they finished, so the announcers weren't confused.
Still wondering who was confused, other than the guy with an ax to grind, and the dopey podcast host who says things like a race that allowed non-binary runners "jumped the woke shark" and is on further examination, EXTREMELY transphobic.
