I believe every single serious distance runner has done something to run with less weight. Carrying as little extra weight as possible is part of the sport. Distance runners try to compete in the lightest shoes and clothing, You can become extremely fit by running 30 miles a week but running more might help you weigh less. Food is often chosen to as a way to cut weight. Lifting weights is great but done in a manner to get strong not bulky.
It's not possible to be a competitive marathoner on 30 miles a week, and I hope you're not suggesting that people who run high mileage necessarily have eating disorders. I'm nowhere near as fast as Molly, but I'm decently fast, and I know for certain that a runner can run high mileage and even be quite lean without having an eating disorder.
I'm happy that Molly is clear (in the article) that her eating disorder is a barrier to success because so much of the eating disorder awareness stuff inadvertently gives the message that all good runners have an ED. That is a very toxic message.

High level running probably increases the risk for ED prone individuals. I think certain personalities have ED and what makes a great runner involves some of these personality traits. It may not be running per se, as a person who has this condition might simply seek out other activities to get to a low weight.
Long-term success in the sport involves a balance between weight and power. Most successful runners are lean, but also powerful. Getting there by just losing weight seems to only work in the short run. A few take the this path and it is one of the risks of the sport. I wish coaches could catch this behavior early on, but short-term performance may cause them to overlook the issue.

This is the stupidest post i have read on letsrun.
She needs to just run and get off of social media. Frankly, that goes for a lot of people. I have no doubt a lot of mental health issues these days are made worse by social media. All my social media is locked to only friends I really know and I go days without posting.
Her job is to run fast, not shill products, so she should give up anything tied to social media, get some mental health, and keep running if that is what she wants to do. I like her and wish her the best.
The problem is it sounds like she can't fully give it up because of the sponsor commitments, which are possibly what enables her to train, run, compete and so on. She may financially need them. However, in an ideal world I agree with you - she should give it up. If someone is constantly getting sh1tty messages on social media it becomes pointless. She could block messages from people she doesn't know which would massively help.
I understand this comment was well intended, but it is actually this mentality that continues to perpetuate the problem, or at least prevent people from seeking help. I have almost died from anorexia so I know what I’m discussing here. Deep down a fear of recovery is often rooted (at least it was for me) in a fear of losing what makes one ‘special’ and letting ‘oneself go’ and giving up the discipline that makes you ‘better’ than others or at least who you might otherwise be without an eating disorder. Being at a low weight or in a calorie defecit for a prolonged period can increase OCD like traits and actually create some of the personality traits we associate with an ED. Certainly these being present prior to the onset increases risk (they were for me), but when the eating disorder becomes chronic (i had periods of recovery that were brief and never got to a fully healthy weight), it is difficult to recognize that you genuinely make not actually have the same personality as you do while malnourished. It doesn’t mean you don’t have the same work ethic or discipline but that you may not be as neurotic and uptight. don’t know exactly where I’m going with this...I just meant let’s not praise the traits that often accompany anorexia.
Also want to clarify one thing about my comment, as it was poorly worded:
obviously, strong discipline is an asset in many areas and there is no denying that this is a desirable thing. HOWEVER you can have strong discipline without anorexia, and in fact the choice to recover is the most robust example of having discipline.
