Collegiate sports are supposed to promote unity and pride in the institution, school spirit, and a connection to the university. These are all 20th century ideals when going to college was actually an accomplishment.

Yes, but that just looks at athletic departments in isolation from the rest of the university. When you look at the departments in the overall picture you'll see that they attract applications from kids who want to keep on with their sport but know they aren't good enough to be deluged with scholarship offers.
My dad graduated from St. Francis, Pa. in 1950. They dropped football at that time. They brought it back around 1980, or so, because they hired a company to find ways for them to increase the number of applications they get. One of the recommendations was to bring back football because they'd annually get about forty applications from kids who played in high school and wanted to play in college but who weren't going to get offers from Penn State or Syracuse, etc.
