I've watched a ton of horror movies in my life, so most don't really scare me. Certain scenes do "stay with me" I guess. One's not even really a horror movie, "Fire in the Sky." The scene with the space suits. Another sci-fi horror movie that was freaky was "Event Horizon."
I just rewatched The Blair Witch Project for the first time in 20+ years. I remember that one being scary the first time I saw it because it seemed so "real" and I used to go camping a lot with my family back then. Actually I remember one time shortly after that movie came out, my sister and I were sharing a tent while camping and got so freaked out by a tree stump that we swore looked like a little old lady that we screamed and woke everyone else up. Upon rewatching it as an adult, I just found it mostly annoying because of the constant bickering between the three characters.
Jaws. I grew up near the ocean. I was too young to see Jaws in it's initial release. But I saw it in a theatre when they rereleased it. I saw it in a movie theatre on the Ocean City boardwalk. So as you come out of the movie, you're staring right at the Atlantic Ocean.
Agreed. This movie was actually much more intense than I thought it would be…especially from the arrival at the mansion until the end of the movie. The last “act” of this movie is so disturbing.
Believe it or not, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs” also stayed with me for a long time after I first saw it…the full reveal of the “monster” and final battle is a bit of a letdown in my opinion, but prior to that, the tone and rising tension works well and is achieved mainly by letting your imagination and fear of the unknown do most of the work.
The series We children of Bahnhof Zoo really bothered me. The death bits. Awful. Awful.
OK, I just looked this up. I see it's connected with Christiane F, a movie I saw a long time ago. Rented it on VHS. Gross, dour movie.
Yes. The odd thing is that Christiane F the film didn't bother me at all. We children of Bahnhof Zoo is simply a remake of it (which looks to modern to be in the '70s in my opinion anyway) but there is just something truly awful about the way the deaths happen. I've watched so many films, this one got to me. I suppose because it was children.
Probably lots of generations on this thread. I have to tell you, at the time, the exorcist was straight up life changing. Along with Jaws and maybe a little Ammityvile Horror. Any of that devil sh@# was chilling. But Jaws changed the planet.
In college, Freddy Krueger was a scary concept, coming for you in your dreams. Wack.
The Conjuring movies deserve a mention. Really well done in an age where horror movies generally stink. Also it has the caveat that it's "based on a true story" which ups the fear factor.
Dunno, I definitely picked the pace up going upstairs weeks and months following.
Fight Club isn't a horror movie but that has disturbed me more than any movie has.
