NAU didn't invest in Nur until after community college stint, when he was somehow already training with the team (a violation?), I'm sure his talent was witnessed then.
They did a good job coaching him to next level, however.
Cmon dude you've gotta be trolling. My D3 team had a bunch of guys who didn't break 4:30 or 9:40 in HS that ran well under 15:00 within a couple of years of joining the program. Top D3 teams thrive off unpolished 9:30-9:40 guys who just need the right training to really make an impact on the national level.
15:00 is reasonable for a guy that ran 9:30-40 in HS but 14:12 is ridiculous. The “right training” would mean they were undertrained in HS.
Why is it always training. What if there was significant improvement/adjustment to 9:42 guy running form. Running form adjustment took both El G and Bernard Lagat to the top.
A suggestion, my dear: If you're going to form plurals using apostophes, you should avoid impugning others' intelligence or education.
It just seems like poor strategy, you know?
'If' shouldn't be capitalized above. You're missing an 'r' in 'apostrophes'.
Excellent catch on the "r," dear. Thank you for the correction!
For material following a colon, I follow the NYTimes stylesheet: If what follows the colon would be a complete sentence when standing alone, then its first word should be capitalized.

The biggest hurdle for a 9:42 runner is not having the right combination of speed and strength. Tweaking a stride will not make a significant difference.
It’s the same thing in other sports; mediocre athletes in HS do not become All-Americans in college.
Smith is the most overrated coach. Yes he's had amazing success the past 5 years but he's nowhere near the level of Wetmore, Treacy, Dave Smith, and some others. His legacy is hurt by:. 1 - Poor women's results. If his training was as good as people claim, his women would be running a lot faster. The true great coaches have equal success between the men and women.
2 - he didn't build NAU, he inherited it. Heins held his hand. Smith hasn't shown he can build something great from something bad.
3 - He was far less successful at previous coaching stops. This proves he is benefitting from circumstances (altitude, inheriting the team) more than he is doing anything magical on his own.
I was a 9:27 HSer and went 14:18 for 5K as a soph in college. Granted this was the 90s but I didn't think my progression was all that astonishing. From that same era I know of 9:30 guys in HS who turned into 13:30 types. I imagine the average HS coach has gotten better in the last 25 years, but there are still unpolished gems out there if you have a good eye. Surprising to me that you find this so suprising.

Shhh… people don’t like logical points. Also, you could add that Galen Rupp has been mediocre under Smith compared to his past success.

Oh and unlike Wetmore he likes his foreign mercenaries.

I mean he did run 2:06:35 PB in the thon under smith right?
Running form adjustment took both El G and Bernard Lagat to the top.
Do you have a source, or any further information on this? The stride of Lagat looks so natural and springy, like his musculoskeletal system is built to provide that. I see similarity in Kessler.

My source is watching him run at WSU his first 3 years.

Congratulations on your excellent progression.
Curious about these 13:30 types. The US didn’t have too many 13:30 runners in the late 90s-early 2000s.

16 of 19 guys on their current roster are American. When they won in 2020 6 of their varsity 7 were American, and Luis was the "foreign" guy and he grew up in Cali and came through the US high school system.
Wetmore has grad student mercenaries. They are much easier to coach and adapt to the NCAA system because they have already proven to be successful. International athletes (or in your terms, foreign mercenaries) are huge question marks. It is MUCH easier to coach an American athlete that has run 8:20 for 3k than an international kid that has run 8:20. It must suck to be so ignorant.
