Every year I'm always amazed at how the video feed at UTMB is better than it is for the major marathons in the US that get decent TV coverage, Boston and NYC. Like here they are, in the mountains of France, middle of damn nowhere and they can get a stable feed...yet on the streets of one of the most populous cities in the world (NYC), NBC can't manage to get a consistent feed without it shaking or cutting out.
I like the all-black kit. Leggings are a choice, but I suspect he's got a plan/reason for them.
Here's more reason to add to my other reply. It's not just to stay warm, it's to save energy. The tights will help save him energy when it gets cold at night in the weather up high. Skinny dudes like him have trouble staying warm in those conditions, burning extra calories while still being maybe uncomfortably cold. That leads to early bonk. Better to use insulation rather than energy to help maintain body temperature, so energy can be directed towards running.
You can only eat, digest, and turn into usable energy so much while racing, so you can't just eat more to cover both staying warm and running (if you are as skinny as him).

Jim has had some real problems getting super cold at night at UTMB. Hopefully his new clothing strategy pays off. It does look weird though.
I have been debating whether to say this or not, but he knows this already. Based on Jim's UTMB history, he has a 2/3 chance of DNF, and a 1/3 chance of finishing. Should be noted that his two DNFs came after his successful finish...
I think that's why he moved to france. I hate this demon inside me that wishes for people to fail. I have to acknowledge it, and say to Jim: "I hope you prove this demon wrong." I really do. Would love to see his emotion if he came out on top over Pau and Kilian (and all the rest of the stacked field). Jim, shut me the eff up.

Good point. I think guys like Walmsley are more than willing to suffer temporarily, but they have to take physiological limitations seriously. And part of that is admitting where ya struggle! Love that he's the only person I'm seeing in tights. Experimentation leads to breakthroughs.
Hoooooo I'm too caffeinated for hour 2 of a hundred miler. Woof woof woof awoogah.
Everyone commenting about Jim wearing tights, I think it was a few years ago guy (forget his name) finished top 10 wearing straight up pants. More than a couple of brands actually came out with light weight running pants (not rain pants) because it set a bit of a trend. It gets cold in the mountains at night. Smart move by Jim.
