HMMM, I was a biology major and currently a doctor and I love tool. If you are not moved by their music (like led zeppelin or jimi) then you are not a not very good judge of complex and thought-provoking music. However, if it just isn't your cup of tea then maybe you should just stop commenting on them. And yes, I often wear a tool shirt under my scrubs. Get into it or get over it...
I don't understand how you can listen to APC and say that Maynard can't sing. Granted he screams a little bit more in Tool, but his voice is still amazing in both bands. His rendition with the Deftones (another band that kicks a whole lot of ass) in their White Pony album is further proof...
I was in the store and saw some DVD's, seems like video discs of videos and a remix. One is for "Parabola" and the other one for "Schism". The price is a big ripoff though, $8 to $10 for what is essentially a video single. Why not put both on one disc and charge $5 for it? I know it's being used as a promo for the new album, but they could've put out a $5 EP with remixes or demo versions or songs that aren't going to make the album.
I love the music, but this is a ripoff... I'll pass until the new album comes out.

I was really into them when I was in highschool, around when Aenima came out. I was really into the whole teen angst thing. Since then, I've finished my undergrad, and am currently working on my post-grad degree. Obviously, my taste in clothing, music, and friends have changed. But while other bands that I listened to back then, Korn etc, have faded from my playlist, Tool has remained. For me, Aenima is one of the best albums I've ever listened to, 2nd perhaps only to Paul Simon's Graceland. I think the band can definitely appeal to a wider audience if people give it a chance. Try to ignore the connotations of "Tool", and listen to the music with an open mind. You'll be surprised.

Tool presents a very interesting situation for me. I JUST DON'T SEE THE GREATNESS. Now before you all beat up on me.....I am a music freak. I love weird and wonderful stuff like Radiohead, Electric Wizard, Opeth, Merzbow, Whitehouse, etc etc etc, and I have read all the wonderful things about Tool, things that say I WILL FOOOOKING LOVE THEM. I've tried 3 cds. Many times. And I just don't get it! I just don't hear a powerful, moving, great band.
Why am I missing it?

Becasue you have discovered music which is far beyond Tool and makes Tool sound like a boy band in comparison. Congratulations.
ya tool is ok. nothing that special. i encourage everyone to download their new cd instead of buying it, cause they really are assholes.
taste is subjective, don't diss it just because you don't like it. that goes beyond showing your apathy, it shows your distain not only for the band, but for the people who do enjoy the music

Look for it in May... www.toolband.com answers to a lot of the rumors that are circulating around about it now. They have a bunch of tour dates listed but only one show in America as of yet...

I thought Lateralus was a very good album, and I'm a big Tool fan. I think Undertow is their best. Where do you guys think Tool's stuff ranks on the Heavy Metal heirarchy? For me, it goes something like this
1. Black Sabbath
2. Metallica
3. Iron Maiden
4. Slayer
5. Megadeth
after that, I think it gets debatable, but I think I would have to put them in my top 10 for sure.

You're right Darren. Tool is a better band than Pantera. Jackass. I don't care if you think your Japanese metal bands are sweet. Maybe they are. I'll probably check them out to see if I like their music. But to rank Tool above Pantera is just idiotic. Plus, I don't think any band that calls themselves "Electric Wizard" could possibly be good.
Tool,linkin park, or slipknot- same band different name. Go goth out at hot topic freaks.
