And Ping will be a major factor. She turns 20 in the spring and I keep hearing that is young for elite runners and we should expect huge improvement from age 19-21.
Grace did not run promising times this season, 5 minute mile and 17:16 5000m, hopefully she turns it around this year.
I agree. They have coaching and culture. I would typically never put them outside of top 5 but knew it would be met with skepticism which is why I put them 6th.
NC State fan here. Based on everything I'm seeing (including Stride Report preview and rankings), it looks like NC State or New Mexico are the favorites. But, of course, injuries can change everything. So that's just based on everyone being healthy. For NC State, what do you guys think about Brooke Rauber and Savannah Shaw? They could be very good 6th or 7th runners for the Wolfpack. Shaw just ran a 15:33 5000m outdoor a few weeks ago in track, but has yet to put it together on the 6k in cross. And Rauber was one of the biggest recruits in XC out of high school. If NC State can get quality depth at their 6 and 7, then I think the Wolfpack could be very hard to beat.
NC State is simply unbeatable with Tuohy, Chmiel, Starliper, Bush, Seymour. One sad thing we non- nc state fans need to accept. Battle for 2nd should be close.
By Murphy's law at least 1 of those 5 is injured for NCAA. Fortunately, state has Shaw, Quarzo, Rauber, Holt and Howlett fighting for spots 5-7 and providing depth.
If she performed great in early season, they might throw her in the mix to compete for 5-8. More likely though is that she red shirts 22-23 competing unattached in both xc and track. That's what Rauber did last year and she was a 3-4time top10 national runner.

Tuohy, Starliper and the rest of the 2020 recruits still have 3 XC seasons left including this year due to covid plus they get powerhouse transfers every year. Tough for the new recruits to secure a spot. You have to break 16 at 5000m as a freshman to be able to join the main group, I assume.

It’s a good thing that those new freshmen sit out their first year so that they get more years to race.

Tuohy ran in both March 2021 and November 2021 but the March 2021 didn't count in her eligibility. Starliper was part of the November 2021 lineup, and she traveled with the team but did not run. Not sure if she used up an eligibility there, but if yes then both Starliper and Tuohy have the same XC eligibility left which is 3 seasons.
They seem concerned with development and long term success, which is smart on the coach's end. It also allows the freshmen to get acclimated and set them up to do well long term. This way they also get to observe running at this level and are prepared for the following year rather than going in blind. NC state is going to be on top for quite a while I think.
