Thinking this event is for the athletes and not fans is an indication of the problem with T&F. Major sports out the fan experience first, they don't ignore it for the participants
Having anything less than an NFL attendance for every session is a failure. This is T&F's super bowl, their World Cup. Even early sessions should be attended like World Cup group stage matches. The US just didn't come out in numbers.
I don't think there is enough track interest in the United States for that to happen. Maybe if the event was held in a major metropolitan area (LA, NYC) and somehow the speculators were blocked from getting tickets, so that the public could buy the tickets at list prices. But even then, I don't see how the day sessions would fill up (the night sessions probably would).
Having it in a major meteopolous and cracking down on resale while keeping prices low are 2 of the steps towards getting there.
Bitter old man that wasn’t happy with his free room and food. It was an amazing experience, yes the tickets were too expensive but anyone that lives in the West and didn’t make it for at least a day or the free Marathons isn’t a real fan of the sport at the pro level.
I wanna go to the Super Bowl! I want GOOD seats and I want them CHEAP. I want a CLEAN hotel right next to the stadium with a DELICIOUS breakfast and a rental car that can go FAST!

Only #LosAngeles2028 can sell 90,000 seats per session for track and field. They did it twice before in 1932 and 1984.
The IOC should make Los Angeles the permanent site for the Olympics 1) for sustainability , and 2) award medalists the construction costs as prize money.
Athletics should be held each and every year, 4 times per year including Summer Outdoor Track, Winter Outdoor Track, Cross Country, Marathon, 1'/2 Marathon, and Ekiden

Perfect post. HRH has just skulked out of the building.
And to all the “high ticket prices” cry babies. Either get a job that pays or watch it on TV. Otherwise STFU. The WC tix weren’t expensive compared to Sunday tickets at the Masters.

Did you read his post? He didn't get free room or food. He paid $150 a night for an un air conditioned dump that didn't have food but he was within walking distance of the stadium.
Suggestion: All journalists should be required to live ten miles from the stadium and run or jog to the stadium every day - how else can we know they know what they're talking about.
I paid $172/night (all in) for an AirBnB Cottage near Florence. It was lovely, though the 2-2.5 hours per day of driving per day and the 10-15min of walking each way to where I parked added up.
I do think you have to factor in March's rapid inflation + just how many major events Hayward hosted in the lead up.
Live in Seattle (about a five hour drive), originally planned to attend NCAAs, outdoor nats, and at least a few sessions of WCH, but instead only attended outdoor nats; it felt like it would be the most bang for my buck.
The fact that there were so many huge variables that could completely affect the experience at WCH played a factor too. Olympic Trials last year was a nightmare because of the heat, the PNW now often gets covered in fire smoke, COVID now always has the potential to wipe out a huge swath of the top athletes simply by virtue of a positive test.
At least with outdoor Nats, it was less about wanting to see specific top athletes from around the world, and more about wanting to watch the best athletes in the USA and at nats that's literally all of them, lol.
Only 1/3 international journalists were present. No surprise since Budapest 2023 is next year. There were hundreds of part-time US freelance advertising, public relations, video and digital operators, and journalists who took vacation from their busy careers.
I'm not sure about your stats. I was in Eugen for the 3rd day (Heptathlon, Men's and Women's 400 heats, Woman's Hammer Finale and Men's 10,000 meter final). Admittedly it was not full, but it was a very enthusiastic crowd. I drove in from Portland and had no trouble getting to the stadium with the shuttle. Honestly I can't remember what I paid for my seats, but I was in the 3rd row and what I paid was no where close to what you quoted. Watching the rest of the meet toward the end of the week, from what I could see the stadium was pretty full, and I was paying attention. From my perspective, it was a success. I had never been to Eugene, it's a great city and they handled the whole flawlessly from my view.

Well that’s a joke. Surely you can’t compare the Super Bowl and the money-making NFL to some competition in a sport that basically is the least watched of all. And hence the prices are completely different in every aspect.

"I wanna go to the Super Bowl! I want BAD seats and I want them EXPENSIVE. I want a FILTHY hotel right next to the stadium with a DISGUSTING breakfast and a rental car that can NOT go FAST!" --- This is what T&F fans should settle for?
There is a clear divide on the board. People that went to Eugene are universal in their praise with a few minor criticisms. Those that didn't or couldn't just take random potshots or borrow some random Euro journalist's rant and present it as evidence that EVERYTHING was a total disaster. Our sport has a bizarre fanbase comprised of passionate fans that love the action and cranks that can only find fault or will not support it unless it is quite literally taking place at the high school two blocks from their house.

Can you read between the lines? He’s in the media and working. Whoever he works for paid the bills, not him. I personally paid for my dumpy hotel, very expensive tickets and all my food for me and my family. You know what? It was amazing and we loved it.
