Keira "Body Image"post

I like to be reminded now and then that LetsRun Message Boards are the best place to find toxic waste.

1. You could have actually read her post and seen she said big

2. You could have seen she used this to a broader purpose and didn't care about her own feelings

3. You had no reason to doubt her or even bring this up.

I’m honestly surprised people are so quick to call her a liar. Kiera seems to avoid drama more than the vast majority of American distance runners. Even in the post, she says it doesn’t phase her much but she worries that those comments can have an impact on runners who are less secure with their bodies. I think it’s a fair thing to speak about. While the commenter may have had no ill intentions, ambiguous comments about someone’s size can be interpreted in a myriad of ways. The fact that so many prosfessional runners commented with similar experiences tells me that these comments aren’t unique to Kiera.

I'm shocked at how many men on here automatically jump to 'the woman is hysterical and lying' about pretty much anything uncomfortable. It's all designed to tell women to shut up and 'stay in your lane' where we get to look at you and say anything we damn well please. Do you know how idiot men talk to women? And men lie WAY more than women. Sorry, it's just true. And yes, I'm a clueless old man. I am so disgusted with the way women are being treated today from the Supreme Court to being sued for lying about abuse to just having to put up with super-intelligent insecure incels who feel the right to say anything they want because some red-pill forum echo-chamber tells them to.

Same. And it's sad. Racism. Misogyny. Insults against any countries that aren't the USA. Anti English sentiment. Anti African sentiment. Short sighted. Setting rules for people to type to like some kind of weird primary school teacher or know it all. Offensive to anyone who isn't white, male, straight. And likes it.

If someone says, "You're too big to be a marathoner," couldn't that be a compliment? Could they be telling you that you don't look gaunt, skeletal and like a stick figure? You've got some form, some shape, you look good?

But like someone said above, you just can't say anything about anyone's looks or body, in today's world. Especially, not man to woman.

Compliments, insults, generic non-statements...You can't say them. They're all insensitive, all insults.

I don’t think she made the whole story up. I think it’s very possible that someone called her big at the world championships, but not in the way she described it. Probably embellished some of the details as we all do. I just don’t know why you would post about it on instagram if you’re trying to brush it off.

Trust me, I know how bad body image is in running. I ran in college and almost every single girl on the cross team seemed like they had some issue with food/eating disorders. It’s really only once you get out of the track/xc world that you realize how unhealthily skinny a lot of women, and men for that matter, are.

I am surprised so many people on here think this is made up when I've read posts on this message board within the past few weeks that say Emma Coburn and Sifan Hassan are both too big/heavy. I have no doubt that someone would tell Keira that she looks "big."

I thought it was absurd that this man spoke to Keira in this way.

But Keira is also talking about this from a perspective and lens of a woman in a small body that is valued by our society and she clearly fits the norms of a distance athlete. She's clearly an elite athlete and her body is quite adept at this job.

It was a little tone deaf for her to say that she was so lucky that her support team has always told her she has a wonderful body, should love and care for it, it performs for her etc etc.

People in larger bodies: fat people: obese people don't actually get that messaging and if that guy had the balls to say something so absurd to HER, imagine what "he" (as a representation of society) says to other women who don't really fit that mold. I didn't think her post really addressed that idea.

Nobody said she was hysterical, just that she was lying. If you don't know that millions of people lie/mislead/exaggerate etc. on social media for attention every day, you haven't been on social media. There are also endless click-bait stories posted on people's pages and shared (often recycled years later) which are entirely made up.

The reason they think she's lying? Her story seems implausible. Look again at the photo of her beside Sarah Hall and Emma, or any of the endless photos of herself on her Instagram page - Keira is NOT big. She's very thin and not tall. If Shaquille O'Neal wrote a story about how a stranger height shamed him and said he was too short to be a basketballer, you would look at pictures of Shaq and think - this story seems untrue. No one would attack you for thinking that. But, because Keira's post deal with women and body shaming, even though it seems equally implausible, you aren't allowed to say "this seems untrue"? Why?

Do I think women (athletes) get body shamed? I sure do. I think it's far too common. Look no further than what happened to Mary Cain. I also think it leads to so many female athletes, like Molly Seidel, having eating disorders. But should that mean that I am not allowed to think Keira's story seems untrue? Maybe someone out there once told Peter Dinklage he's too tall to be an actor. Maybe someone out there told Mo Ahmed he's fat. Anything is possible. It sure just seems highly unlikely.

I am not saying she is in peak marathon shape, but I 100% think the "Keira had 2 weeks to train" is exaggerated. She had to know she was the alternate and she saw Molly pull out of Boston in April with an injury. She saw Molly drop out of the New York Mini-10K in the beginning of June because her TUE for Adderall still hadn't been approved. Anyone who follows Molly's social media knows she was a question mark for Worlds since spring. Keira can say what she wants about only having 2 weeks to "train," but I'm not buying it. She was watching, and she knew this was increasingly likely. I think it's probably likely USATF was in conversation with her early about keeping that date open. Our two A-Team runners, Bates and Hall, wanted no part of the aggressive and erratic pace change games the East Africans played in the early part of that race. D'Amato went out with the East Africans and tried to hang. That doesn't indicate someone who has the confidence of a runner on 2 weeks of marathon training. She clearly felt she could compete.

Women in general seem tone deaf when they claim that society oppresses them about their bodies. Plenty of women make very generous livings by showing off their bodies. Even the ones that don't conform to "societies rigid standards of beauty." This morbidly obese woman makes the equivalent of $25,000/month showing off her fat rolls on camera.

I'd like to amend this, because I posted it before I read Keira's actual IG post. The way she describes it, I actually agree with her. If I'm sitting in a crowd watching an event and a total stranger starts talking to me, then starts making my body size, type and shape, the topic of the conversation, I'd pretty very annoyed. I'm a guy.

Yes, cancel culture has gone too far and sometimes people can be too eager to amplify perceived insensitivities. But that doesn't negate common sense. If I'm in a social setting, there's no way I'm going to strike up conversation with a total stranger and start commenting on their body size, shape, hair (or lack thereof), face, looks, or other aspects of their appearance. That's just common sense; or at least it should be.

I'd be thinking, "I just placed 8th in the World and proved I'm better than literally 4 billion others in my event, and you're sitting here telling me, a total stranger, there's something 'not quite right' about my body, for what I do? Seriously? What are you top 10 in the world at?"

Whenever a story like this arises, yoy can count on the LRC bros to insist it didn't happen, while they spend the rest of their time on threads talking about how Allie is too skinny, and the other Allie is too fat.
