This is a fantastic idea - I love it. No sarcasm here. The favourites will 99% of the time only run 3 races (in the 1500m), so it won't affect them. You train your whole life to get to the Olympics then bomb your first race - now you get another chance. If one of the favourites does not qualify in the first round - how exciting to watch them come up and have some extra adversity.
Brilliant idea. In Tokyo Josh Kerr barely made the semis. Imagine if he did get eliminated in the first round and had to work his way back - that is exciting!

Same, u lose nothing by adding this
Another way to look at it-new system will penalize anyone not considered a top runner who gave maximal effort to nip a top runner at the line to eliminate them. Under the new system they might have to give maximal effort again to try to eliminate that top runner again in the semi final or final.
