If attendance is light, one look at the preliminary rounds in the 100M speaks volumes. There are high school state meets with far better results. I assume these rounds are a political necessity?

It was said by Steve Cram I think in the BBC commentary that every country gets at least one slot in the championships for an athlete regardless of event and that most choose the 100 metres.
It is far more interesting to see someone from the Cook Islands, to pick just one, getting the joy of the big stage than seeing the 150th ranked American who may be 2 tenths of a second faster.

"The big stage" ...
It is the World Championships. 2nd only in importance and profile to the Olympics. Sad that Americans are so apathetic that a fairly small stadium is so sparsely attended.

I don't blame them for not attending the Friday morning session to watch the best runners from the Cook Islands compete

I wanted to go but didn't feel like spending $5k+ when I could watch it all on TV and use that money for several other trips 🤷🏻♂️
Wrong. Plenty happened. Brutal last 10km for in the men's 20kW laid down by the Japanese duo. Chinese women were major league upset in the women's 20kW.
Haven't been following the men's HJ jump in forever, but has anyone else gotten over 8ft other than Sotomayor?
No one since Sotomayor, though Barshim was extremely close a few years back. And he's been looking incredible so far, maybe he can return to PR form and that record isn't out of reach
The high jump is looking to be super fun this champs
