So did Nike screw over Sumner????
Goes way out to OR to run a special staged 800 in the Nike castle. Two of Nike's biggest US pro stars are scheduled to run but then do not show up. One of the Nike pacers never leads/paces anyone, follows all, and drops out at 600. A former Nike University runner and now AUS pro runs way slower than planned. Sumner may have thought he was ok if he stayed close to the Nike AUS pro but runs way slower than planned and way slower Flatt did today. Sumner does finish second overall but that means nothing in this race. and he also finishes DFL.
A) the race sucked and made no sense for Sumner to fly out for.
B) he didn’t even stay with Hunter, who wasn’t running fast enough. Can’t blame Nike for that.
Sumner was already out there for Brooks, it was an extra two day stay. I didn't like this anyway, it was not near any HS conditions, 6 starters, multiple pacers. When all is said and done, all this stuff shows, is how , even though he became a "whatever happened to?", Michael Granville's solo record in a State Pre LIm, still trumps all of this "lets help record setting" contrived stuff.
It will be interesting to see if Sumner trains under Henner who just joined UGA staff or will train with the long sprinters next year.

Totally agree. SUPER lame for a couple of pros to first say they're going for the world championship standard...and end up as no shows, especially when they're teammate Hunter needs the standard. Could have at least helped pace him for something! Not easy to be fans of athletes that talk big game and they bow out at the last minute. Man up!

We all better hope not
currently, sumner trains for the 200 and 400. 800 was just an event he found out he was good in.

Pretty well established that his parents/coaches plan was always to develop speed by focusing on the shorter stuff now to be better at the 800 later. Far from something he “found out he was good in.”
