My boss is not allowing me to do my summer training in the mornings

I used to run at peak heat all the time during my college days. It felt bad but I never saw an issue with it (besides sunburn). Does this actually mess up training? Like yeah, your pace will be slower but you're putting in solid work during bad conditions. Surely there is some benefit?

Then again I was thoroughly mediocre so maybe I just screwed myself over lol.

I became an All-Region XC DI after working sleep away camps in upstate NY. However we were allowed to run before the kids would wake up if we had it covered. We then ran a second time before dinner. Put in 90+ mile weeks then playing all day sports with 6-16 year olds. Fittest time of my life.

That might make sense, but setting an alarm in a cabin full of sleeping kids and co-counsellors is a great way to piss everyone off.

As a "real man" with 2 kids I can attest that getting out quiet is critical. I can't imagine doing it in a room with 11-13 others.

Most kids can sleep through a fire alarm.

I used to have to do midday Florida runs due to my schedule. My #1 tip is to lower performance expectations. Initially I tried to run my regular training plan and imploded into disastrous lightheaded walk-jogs on the way home until I got the memo. Slow down and if you have to lower mileage to get in quality miles do it. A 7 mile even-effort success is much better than a 10 mile dive bomb. Quality over quantity.

If you have access to water fountains soak your shirt in them at each stop. Sunglasses and a wet or iced hat will help keep your head and face cooler. If you’re going to be doing loops you can stash hydration or even a bucket/cooler with ice

That might be one of the better profiles I've read about runners (excluding, of course, anything written by Kenny Moore, R.I.P.).

Like most things, being a camp counselor can be really hard work if you want to be good at it. During the summer following high school graduation, I was a camp counselor for about ten to twelve kids, five to seven years old, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I remember that it was very hard work, and I still wasn't very good at it. I just realized that all of those kids would now be at least fifty years old. I would be surprised to discover that all of those kids are still alive and out of prison. I would also be surprised to learn that I had a particularly positive impact on any of them, which is sad.

If the original poster is allowed to run only at 4:00 p.m., that's that. My advice is to fill up the allotted time with running, slow and steady, if you can do it without breaking down or neglecting your duties. Try to make a difference in a kid's life, if you're able.

This thread doesn’t make sense. I saw Meatballs—Bill Murray was a camp counselor and he had time to jog every morning.

But a little more seriously, if the job demands that you work all day with the kids (except a break in the afternoon) and stay “on duty” all night as a supervisor in a cabin, I personally can’t imagine there’s enough money in a summer camp’s budget to make it worth it.

It sounds as though you would simply be a bad match for the job. I know I was, and I was also a bad match for the Air Force, which made my summer of flight training at Lackland Air Force Base (San Antonio, Texas) even more miserable than it might otherwise have been. (For that job, cadets were required to run 1.5 miles around a parking lot every weekday morning, which at least gave me up to eight minutes of running a day, with a few longer runs at midday on weekends. The many hours of marching, standing at attention, and saluting didn't do much for my running.)

Know your priorities, needs, and responsibilities before you commit to the job, and after you commit, do it well. For better or for worse, a runner who appears to put his running ahead of his employment will be noticed, probably in a negative light.

Oh ho ho...what do we got here? Another entitled brat? Ever heard the phrase: "You're fired"? It sucks at any level, spoiled one.

I grew up in Texas. I don't think I EVER ran at 4pm in the summer. I would seriously advise against it. Try and run in AM before stuff starts or later in pm.

Wake up early, and do short loops around the cabin you are supervising. You'll be able to keep an eye on the cabin, and if the boss ever finds out and has an issue with that - it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission....at least in this scenario.

I use to meet up with a group at Luke's Locker at 6:00 PM. Sometimes even hotter.
