He had about 6 scholarships to work with at ND. He will be lucky to have 3 at Tennessee. He won't be happy after a few years of crappy teams.
This is comparable to Solinsky at Florida. All Solinsky needs to do is score a few distance points and he'll get a women's track national title every year (they'll get a men's title without any distance points easily). This year he grabbed a few in the 800 and his 5k runner came out of nowhere for 8th and clinched the team title before the 4x4.
Has any distance coach since Timmons + Ryun benefitted from the performance of a single athlete the way that Solinsky probably will from Valby's amazing 5K? He is set for years now, if not life.

Tinman got a pro coaching group solely because of Drew Hunter.
not necessarily true. recruiting shouldn’t be too hard
solid state school, top notch facilities, great overall history, and a phenomenal team
It won’t be extremely hard, but he’ll have less money than Beth used. I believe he’ll have to show a level of athlete development he maybe didn’t have to at ND. Can he turn a 9:15 kid into a 13:30 5k guy or a 5:00 girl into 4:15 1500m. If not, his first agenda should be to hire an assistant with this caliber of experience, not a lackey.
ND had 8 guys sub 14 and/or sub 28:50 for 10k this year. Two of their 7 distance runners at NCAA’s outdoors this year were 9:17 and 9:18 out of high school. What greater level of development are you hoping to see? Also what coach with two national champions is hiring an assistant to take advice from about “athlete development?”
Also for all those saying how it’s hard to recruit distance runners to Tennessee because it’s academics are worse than ND. Let’s ask Arkansas, Oregon, Iona, Portland, Tulsa, Iowa State and Ok State about that problem. Talent is everywhere, just because you can’t get the footlocker national champ doesn’t mean you can’t find it.
Most are naive. 12.6 scholarships divided between 50 guys is hard when many are allocated to sprints and throws at Tennessee. He will last 3 years and then have no great future.
All of those low academic schools you just listed allocate at least 75% of their scholarships to distance. THAT IS THE ISSUE.
How naive are some of you?
Have you been paying attention to the NCAA? The idea of traditional scholarships is nearing obsoletion -- the SEC is going to be able to pay for anybody they want. That's the whole point, old timer

SMH....he had a lot more than 6 scholarships to work with at Notre Dame, more like 10. Only one scored at NCAA outdoors this year and only one last year at NCAA outdoors.
Sucks for any ND runner who might want to follow their coach. Giving up a ND degree for…Tennessee.
Plenty of top distance runners go to Oregon and Arkansas, which are exactly know for high academics. If a kid is really smart and a great distance runner, they can go to a powerhouse distance program and then just finish their masters degree at a much more prestigious university.

Fair point but if Chris secures his position at Florida, I think that would be a situation that Tom would very much envy.

Ok and who did these 9:17/9:18 guys have to train with? Exactly. Also, for those 2, how many others with similar PRs the past 10 years that Carlson been coaching there hasn’t broken 14. Exactly. You get 60-70 of those type of guys over the span of 10 years then yes you better have at least a couple at nationals by year 10. No pats on the back for your comments sir. You think that’ll happen at Tennessee? Lol yes he better find an assistant that can help with development you think this man got it all figured out ok ok nice one.
Those expecting ND to make a big hire might be surprised. When the ND women were good and men were not, Matt Sparks handed the men over to Carlson. Now that ND men are far better than women, look for Sparks to try heading up both programs again with the new hire being his assistant. ND is so cheap they won’t get a proven coach.
Scholarships and money will not be an issue at Tennessee. He will have all the resources he needs. This AD and the administration are serious people. If he doesn’t win it won’t be because of lack of resources. New indoor track coming too.

This has dirty money written all over it. Opposing coaches will be reporting him for recruiting violations left and right.

Do you really need another distance coach at Notre Dame? 4 of the 6 full-time coaches were distance coaches before Carlson left.

How so? Every school has 12.6 regardless if the are Tennessee or Notre Dame or SW Nothing State U. And Tennessee puts most into sprints and throws which doesn't leave many for distance.
