I threw myself into academics. I didn't party at all. I was one of those weird ones who stayed up late studying. I found that I enjoyed learning. For most people, it seemed school ruined their curiosity and interest in learning, but it was the reverse for me: I found that I enjoyed learning.
I completely neglected training and I have zero regrets. In fact, I sometimes think about what might have come of me if I prioritized running more, and I hadn't discovered my interests.
The only time I took running seriously was in high school and now. I run now strictly for health reasons; I don't care what my times are.
Overtrained in high school - my fault entirely and earned a couple of bulging discs for my efforts. Got a D1 scholarship and convinced myself I could train with anybody there, and then bombed colossally.
That's easy for me to answer, I just didn't have any talent!! I also never raced well. I was a workout warrior and it never translated to the actual races.
College career went really well for me. Took it seriously, never got injured, broke some school records, etc. Post college for me hasn’t been going great though but hoping to bounce back. Many of the people I ran with that partied a lot and quit running all together have better jobs then I do and are much further a long in their careers then me. I’ve only been out for about 2 years so I’m hoping to turn things around soon. Instead of “sucking in college” I’m kinda sucking in real life. Hopefully my college drive will eventually help me turn things around.
I used to unload trucks in the summer in college. Once the lower back and hamstring soreness got better after the first two weeks, was basically low level aerobic exercise for 8-9 hours a day. Add in 70-80 miles per week and I was FIT! However, I was moving all day.
When I lifeguarded and sat in the sun all day while barely moving, it led to some horrible runs.
In retrospect, when I started sitting on my butt all day in the office for 8-12 hours a day, I was slowly getting really tight, and it was over.
I think landscaping/construction/etc. is underrated as additional aerobic work.
