Not every play can be an ESPN highlight. Every sports team has an unforgettable moment that cost them a game, but none are worse than the infamous "Fifth Down Game," a college football clash between the Colorado Buffaloes and...
To this day, 40 years after that final buzzer sounded, 12 silver medals lay unclaimed in a storage room maintained for the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. History says those silver medals belong to the Americans. Dou...
She likely would have broken the WR if the hurdles were correctly placed. World Leader doesn't mean a whole lot unless there are contract stipulations...it shouldn't count.
Might quite possibly be the first appearance of "homologated" on this message board.

Being nitpicky, but the World Cup courses should have more climb than you suggest, 200+ feet per mile. Also times could be a lot faster for the 10k, 15k, and 30k than you suggest (which a lot of hobby skiers could hit even on homologated course), but totally course condition dependent. For instance, there was a sub-30 15k this winter on the World Cup.
Anyway I just started this thread because I love the Olympics but I know very little about cross country skiing (or most of the winter events for that matter). I thought we the variants of cross country skiing were classical...
Hate to break it to you, but Nike provides most of the track money in the United States. You might not like Nike as a company, but without their money professional track and field in the United States would be much worse off.
And here with in lies the problem. Nike is the best thing ever to happen to track & field and Nike is the worst thing to ever happen to track & field.
The fact that Nike controls so much is the fact that the USATF "leadership" has courted them for decades. Why does a shoe company have to be the sponsor of 80% of athletes? Blame the agents for being lazy, blame the federation for enriching themselves and blame anyone who supports this for being the problem with the sport. Nike is 83rd in global sales, that means 82 other companies should be using our athletes as walking, talking global billboards to promote our sport instead of Max Siegel making more per year than any US athlete. Is our sport about the athlete or is it about him?
This sport is a clown show. Imagine something like this happening in ANY other sport.

Newsflash: Officials are now deciding whether to reply Game 2 of the NBA Finals after it was discovered the rim on the home end of the arena was only 9 and a half feet high.
The winner list of the Bausch & Lomb Championships, better known under the name of Amelia Island and wiped off the professional tour map in 2008, includes some former stars such as Navratilova, Sabatini, Graf,...

Yeah, imagine of an NFL crew got the number of downs wrong in a game, or an MLB ref got a pitch count wrong, a scorekeeper not starting the clock in an NBA game....oh wait, all those things have happened? multiple times?

That's different. Those other mistakes happen in the heat of the moment.
In a track meet there is plenty of time when setting up hurdles to have a senior official double check all the hurdles. But in this case no one at the meet bothered to double check.
They saved 5 minutes, and Sydney McLaughlin lost a world record. Shame on them for being lazy and incompetent.
Many “volunteers” are forced to be at these meets by corporate bosses. If I was forced to volunteer I would not care if the hurdle in in the right place or not their at all. Sid must be kicking herself for not signing at Nike , so she wouldn’t have to do these community races.

You are wrong about everything you wrote.
It's the meet officials responsibility to double check that all the hurdles are in the right place. And the meet officials aren't forced to be at these meets by corporate bosses.
Sydney McLaughlin running at this meet had nothing to do with who her sponsor is. She likes running early season races at smaller meets because it's less pressure. It's her decision, not her sponsor's decision.

There was an Olympics where the vault was set to low for the gymnasts

I remember that. It was the same thing as what happened McLaughlin's race. Someone at the Olympics set the vault too low and no one else bothered to double check it. And some vaulters got injured.
Double checking things is not hard to do, but some people are too lazy to do it. Shame on them.
Now that I am looking at it, it is blatantly clear that the 5th or 6th hurdle is in the incorrect spot. Her stride pattern went from 14’s to a 16 to a 13. That means the hurdle was in the wrong place. Will this count?
I was on a facebook group and I said she was 13 stepping and some guy just said NO.
Then the truth about the hurdle comes out. I counted two 13 step hurdles.
