Condolences to the runner’s near ones. Has an official cause of death been made public by the family?

Very sad. I hope this discussion can incorporate some of the physiologic effects of training as well as preventative measures to identify those individuals who are at increased risk of sudden cardiac death related to exercise (eg. those individuals with unrecognized [congenital] hypertrophic cardiomyopathy).
Been saying for a long time we need to have EKGs and echocardiograms included in standard physical examinations. Too many young lives are being lost to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and occult arrhythmia like Brugada.

Since the mid 80s, 26 Americans have died in marathon races including 2 runners in the 2006 LA marathon and 3 runners in the 2008 NYC marathon.

That many "youngsters" are dropping daily right now from heart issues, running or not.

Another report says 5 runners were in serious condition. Why so many? Is this normal for a race to have people in "serious condition"?
So sad, hopefully everyone is okay. Sad to hear the 37 year old guy died.
"FDNY said five runners were in serious condition and eight were in non-life-threatening condition."

I credit it to the heat. In Mid-Atlantic region, this is first day of true-heat.

100% agree
Here is a photo of the runner mid-course and just before the finish line. He was bib #874 and finished in 1:40:53.

Sad to see this happen to any runner. The heat and humidity must have been pretty high today on the course.
The East Coast summer (and mid May apparently) in this age of incredible warming, is NOT a place to run and have fun in that kind of beastly humidity. I moved west 18 years ago, never regret for one minute.
You signed the waiver bro.

Not for half marathons in direct sunlight though? I agree it would be brilliant conditions for a track meeting (shame Birmingham couldn't have swapped the weather with New York!).

Check out Chicago Marathon Oct 2007’ , that day was brutally warm and I believe a guy in his 30s died. They shut the race down half way through b/c too many runners were going down. It’s always sad to hear when a runner dies in a race. It’s very unfortunate.
Here you have some races organized when it s 90 degrees and 85% humidity and sun and extremely uphill.
But it s true that everybody trains for that weather as it s here 6 months per year.
