I don’t. Kessler didn’t have an early start but managed 3:34 and Ryun didn’t commence distance running until he was a sophomore. There are a wide range of effective training methods so it doesn’t take a Brosnan for a runner to reach his HS potential. When Rudisha set his WR, the other runners in the race had the best pacer in 800m history but they couldn’t keep up.
Hobbs Kessler, the kid coached by Ron Warhurst in high school? Great example.
Jim Ryun, who was coached by Bob Timmons in high school and college? Another great example.
Believing pacing is ineffectual because no one could hang on to Rudisha one time? Stupid.
That’s 2 coaching examples but Virgin, Fernandez and Grijalva all came from high schools with zero distance running traditions.
There have been countless 800m records set by someone that led the entire race. You’ve never seen a race where someone tried to keep up with a slightly faster runner, got dropped and then got passed passed by others coming down the home stretch? It happened to Wolhuter at the 1976 Olympics and maybe if he had hung back, he could have won the Silver. Stupid.
Was not able to back up the big talk and I imagine he was peaking for this race. So if we had online betting on track, I would be putting $1000 on him not breaking it. And whether or not he is already 19, he is not eligible for U20 records in 2023, so Brazier is also safe.
Seriously? For the 50th time, he is NOT 19 and will not be for months. And if he gets in one more set up race, the record goes down.He barely missed, running very close to even, out on the egd e bit further and he gets this.
There’s nothing wrong with being confident, even cocky, if that’s a driver for performance. Some people are extroverts and Cade surely seems like that. If he believes he’s the best ever for US high school 800, he just might be. We’ll see in the next month. I think he’s got good shot.

I would be really excited to put in prop bets at BetMGM.com against him getting any more PRs in 2022. He could have gotten it last night, but conditions were slightly off ideal. Next year he will be running 1:44's and peaking in June not mid-May. Maybe I am wrong about his coaching and this is just a hunch, but I would definitely be seeking out online betting action if it were available on track. I have lost my shirt betting props in basketball and man I wish it was available in track. I would be betting against Flatt and especially Jager.

Bob Timmons had also coached Archie San Romani Jr to the national HS mile record right before Jim Ryun. Yes, Ryun had ridiculous talent but Timmons was the equivalent of a Brosnan back in his day. There's no way Ryun would have run sub 4 in HS without his guidance and knowledge.

Exactly. Mr. "Nothing but talent matters" names two guys with legendary coaches.
Not sure what you're reaching for here. The point is that he didn't. There's. More to the game than how much talent is in your body, discipline and focus is probably more than half of the formula.
Did they keep him back at school for a few years??
Derr derr derr. I saw a two month old that looked mid 50s derr derr derr. Barely any hair. Derr. No way 2 months. What did dey keep him skool an extra 45 years?? Derr derr
Because he races. Because he delivers on his bragging. Because he runs middle distance. Because he isn't a useless instagram stoner.
For starters.
I actually wish she would come back, but she is swallowed up by her own grift.
What did he deliver on?
Flatt delivered on his promise to let it all hang out...100% effort no matter what. Wasn't an ideal situation but he still delivered on that promise and nearly got the record. 2nd all time .06 away is awesome.
Couple of things, I watched the race, first time I had seen him. He is very impressive. Did he say in the post race interview "It was a nice win"?? Or did I mis hear that?
It looks like the birthdate info you provided would be accurate, in that case, he is clearly on the older side of HS running, about 4-5 months worth? There are plenty of folks turning 18 into their Senior years in Sept/October. This stuff used to be a big deal to me, however in these days when you have 23-24-25 year olds(5th AND 6th year guys) beating up on 18/19 year olds in the same college window, I no longer care that much
He did go a little conservatively could have connected to the back of the lead pack at 51. mid?
So close to the national record. He will get it this year
Is it only in America that we are so obsessed with times at a certain age or times at a certain level of school? What exactly is the physiologic difference between a 19 year old and a 21 year old. Flatt looks like a full grown man without much physical maturity left to go. Maybe he’ll get a lot faster, maybe not. Colin Sahlman looks like a scrawny HS kid, so he looks to me like he’s got a lot more chance for advancement. It’s really not the age, that’s just a surrogate.
the kid is impressive... I saw the race.... there are those who believe, that head to head, Will Sumner would win...Sumner, I think, is headed to NON in Eugene...what a match up that'd be!
How much time did Flatt lose running in the second lane of the final turn? He also had to abruptly slow down on first lap because he nearly ran into the backside of a runner ahead of him. Sure, that's the nature of the beast, but under better conditions, he takes G's record.
