Leo probably would have run sub 4 if they hadn't started him way out in lane 8 and forced him to run a lot of extra distance on the curve the first 100 meters of the race.

It was an absolutely horrible start, especially because Leo and Lex had to pause at the start to let Colin out ahead of them or he would have been completely cut off and pushed off the track.
That was crazy, he really went after it once Colin stepped out! Is this the fastest mile by a junior other than Ryun? I wonder if all top 4 NP guys will have broken 4 by the end of the season. Aaron was just behind Colin in the 800 tonight, and Leo just ran 4:00, I really think they're both going sub-4 this season if they get in a race that has competition that fast.
I'm willing to bet the three Newbury juniors break 4 this season. Arcadia's gonna be lit. Let's hope Brosnan puts them all in the 3200 and doesn't let Aaron do the mile again. And yes that is the second fastest junior mile after Ryun's sub 4. Bernie Montoya ran 4:01.32 his junior year, and Reinhardt Harrison ran 4:01.34 his sophomore year. Those were the second and third fastest underclassman times in US prep history. Although Reinhardt Harrison did run 4:06 in 20mph winds at the beginning of his junior year, before losing the rest of his season to injury. That puts him up in the 4 flat to sub 4 range imo.

and can we please start calling colin the greatest hs runner of all time? in 3 month he has broken the 5k xc record, the 3200m record, run a 3.58 indoor and now a 1.48 absolutely solo

he's certainly one of the greats and that's a conversation to have, but the 800 wasn't a solo effort when his brother finished a tenth of a second behind him

to analyze where Colin ranks right now, you have to remember the greats who came before him. Jim Ryun certainly must still rank ahead of him, breaking 4 as a junior and getting third at the Olympic trials that summer. He then ran 3:55 as a senior to break the world record. That's tough to beat as far as GOAT high school status.
Other contenders include
Alan Webb, 3:53 high school mile. Hobbs Kessler, 3:57 indoor mile record and running faster than the collegiate 1500 record outdoors with 3:34.
Galen Rupp, 13:37 high school 5k record
Lukas Verzbicas, 8:29 2 mile.
Imo Sahlman has not matched any of these accomplishments yet, but he still has an outdoor season to go and stands a chance to.
This proves that Brosnan can coach the 800m and that just by working on speed a bit more, quality high school milers can drop their 800 times a lot. Four seconds for Aaron here and over a second for Colin. They might just get into the 1:47s with a college field.
I would think that this, plus the 8:03, for Aaron means that he will go sub-4 this year, and very probably Leo as well. He had a great pacer through 1k but what if he had people to draft off of the whole way? Just very, very impressive at the high school level, and three of these four guys are juniors!
Colin beats Aaron, both in 1:48; 3rd was 1:50, another NP kid in 1:54.
It’s crazy how these guys make a 1:54 look pedestrian.
I might be wrong, but it looks like that 1:54 was run by a guy who never ran xc or track until this track season, but was on the NP soccer team for 3 years, including this one. His first track meet was a 100m/200m double. Only took him a month to run 1:54. If I am just spewing misinformation (which is possible, I just looked it up quickly), someone with actual knowledge please correct the record.

I don't think any of these kids will run 1:47 this year. The year is just too short to achieve A goals from 800m to 5000m. Brosnan doesn't have to prove he can coach. He's already proven he can coach. We are however bearing witness to a once in a generation culmination of talent, dedication, and coaching to produce a team unlike anything the US HS system has ever seen. These kids will break any US HS distance record they want to or at least come close to. The question is which records do they target and which records do they run for "fun".
Based on what I know, which admittedly isn’t much compared to those following the program more closely, I predict this season: C. Sahlman will run 3:55/8:25y, they will have 3 break 4 (Colin, Aaron, Leo), and Aaron will be the slowest at 2 miles with an 8:33. 8:33y will be the 4th fastest on a single high school team.

Remarkable continual improvement by the NB core four. The upcoming Penn Relays 4 x 1 mile on April 29th takes on added interest after their latest amazing performances tonight. Whereas a sub-16:20 performance was previously a reach even outdoors against superior competition, now 16:10-16:15 is top-end conceivable, which I believe would put them in the U.S. Men's All-Time Top 10 list, period...which order will Brosnan run them? Aaron wilted a bit leading off solo at New Balance Indoor Nationals...perhaps following three pros will bring out his best in the opening leg? He certainly now seems capable of 4:00 after his 1:48.9 and 8:01.7 races this year. Then Leo, to keep things relatively close, then weakest leg Lex running third before Colin tries to finish with a sub-4:00 anchor? Any thoughts?

I would run the fastest two in the first two spots, so they can try to hang with the pros. Then run the 3rd fastest guy third, and the slowest guy last.
The last guy may have to run on his own. But at least the first 2 or 3 legs can be pulled to fast times by the pros that they should be relatively close to. Splits of 3:58, 4:00, 4:01, 4:04. Or something like that.
