In WWII about 1/4 million Russian soldiers were killed defending Savastopol from the Nazis.
Almost the entire population of Crimea speak Russian. 65% are ethnic Russian vs 15% Ethnic Ukrainian.
In 2014 far right extremists began systematically purging Russian language and culture in Ukraine, with hundreds of Russians killed.
Crimea was already semiautonomous. A 2014 referendum with 89% voter turnout voted 97% in favour of re-joining Russia. The Crimean parliament held a similar vote.
Even if you feel these numbers are exaggerated it is an irrefutable and astoundingly clear majority.
Do we uphold democratic will of the People only when it suits us ?
Regardless of the Russian sentiment in the Crimea region, the map was re-drawn and it was declared Ukrainian territory.
Putin and Putin alone made the choice to invade this territory and slaughter many innocent Ukrainains in .
The myth that Crimea is Russian territory is nothing more than a myth. Crimea was on Ukrainian lands that were invaded by Putin.
For an ethic Ukrainian, you don’t seem to know much about Ukrainian history.
Here is the “myth” of Crimea simply explained…
Crimea was ceded to Russia in 1783 by the Ottoman Empire and remained Russian territory until 1954, when it was amalgamated by the USSR as part of the Ukraine Socialist Republic, still ostensibly still under “Russian” control until the 1991 dissolution of the USSR.
In 1991 Crimea was given autonomous status by Ukraine.
So you have Crimea under marginal Ukraine control for 23 of the last 239 years

I am not well read on Ukrainian history but I have read a little. I was aware how the territory of Crimea held many ethnic Russians.
That's besides the point. Officially it was recognized as territory of the Ukraine. Canada, the same country you live in also recognizes Crimea as Ukrainian territory.
A Canadian citizen lost his life on flight mh17 which was shot down by Russian separatists over this territory in July, 2014.
As a Ukrainian Canadian you take an odd stance on the defence of your historic homeland.
Citizens of both countries are suffering because of decisions made by their governments, most of which they had no involvement.
I agree with your statement here but not with your headline. I think many people feel sorry for the innocent citizens on both sides but the concern for the Ukrainian citizens is orders of magnitude higher as they are the ones being murdered.
Nobody should be amazed at the effectiveness of lies and gaslighting that is being done in Russia. Look at the US over the last 5 years. 1/3 of the population believe a criminal, narcissist, money laundering, pathological liar was sent by God Almighty to rule the country for their benefit as a Christian nation. Oh Yeah, and they also believe that vaccines that have been proven to be affective medicine for 50 years are the governments secret method of control and to kill us.
Ask yourself, how did the US population get so stupid?
But it might just have something to do with the fact that Ukrainians have bombs raining down upon them and shrapnel flying all over killing family members. Average Russians, not so much.
Just a hunch.
Plenty of Russian soldiers have been killed that may not have agreed with the actions of their government. Also, many Russians are being destroyed financially because of decisions made by their government.
"No (child out of wedlock) ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making some other poor dumb (child out of wedlock) die for his country." George Patton [word definitions used rather than actual words to placate the mods]

Most folks I know (friends, family, colleagues) are aware and empathetic towards the suffering of your "average" Russian citizen. It seems the consensus is just to hate on the Russian oligarchs and heads of state. Are you a troll fishing for division?

Lots of people don't have sympathy for the Russian people because Russia=enemy.
Lots of people feel bad for the crushing poverty and the stalinesque purge which is beginning in Russia. And most people feel worse for the Ukrainians.
The average Let's Run poster thinks Putin stole it.
The western media is in the propaganda business just like RT.
In a hastily held referendum two weeks after Russia had invaded operated largely by the Russian military where opposition may or may not have risked being murdered if they showed up?
While a majority of Crimeans may have supported rejoining Russia, it wasn't 97% and there still isn't a source on supposed ethnic cleansing of Russians in Crimea.
