Amazing Newbury Park Win

My mistake. Different meet results I was comparing yesterday. The mile was run today and the runners were faster.

That was such an uninformed, easily researched ,blunder, you should be banned for no less than 2 weeks.

I completely agree but he could and should also go for the US High School 10K Record as well - Rudy Chapa ran 28:32.7 back in 1976. It's tough but I think he could do it!

You’re tough, even for a king. Your grandfather, king9 would have understood that three indoor nationals run at the same time, one college and two high school, all with mile races, leads to some false conclusions. Your father king99 made a similar mistake once and I let him slide. As I recall, he was making a larger point, about which he was correct.

Zero chance he or anyone on that team could come close to that record, past 5k today's HS runners are chumps and that record is ludicrously good. I'd be shocked if anyone on Newbury could run under 29 right now, zero doubt they all could in a few years in college but Chapa's record is an all-timer.

Also we have gotten better at nearly everything in the past 50 years. I actually can't name one thing an old person has been better at than me recently.

The Youngs and Sahlmans live in Camarillo, which is only 10 minutes away from NPHS according to Google Maps. People drive 10 minutes to get to the HS within their school zone all the time. And they weren't even recruited for running. NPHS was nothing special before Brosnan arrived. They came because NPHS has better academics and less issues with crime compared to their local school.

Wrong. The Sahlmans were 100% recruited to NPHS for running. They are far from scholars. NPHS was nothing special before the Youngs and Sahlmans arrived and will be nothing special once they are gone.

It's also important to consider this 16:29 (and a good portion of the 17:01 race by loudon valley) are basically solo effort. The Newbury Park run was entirely solo. They don't have anyone around to push them. Usually the Young brothers and Aaron are all with each other but this effort had to be solo. Very impressive and I love that they went for the record!

I hope they go for something like this again outdoors. Maybe even a 4x800!

I keep hearing they were solo. Only the lead was solo. The other legs all had people to chase that they were lapping. Now I understand there is some downside to having to pass runners, but there is also an advantage to having people to chase the entire race by lapping those in front of you.

Thank you for supplying that wonderful list. It’s full of names of old friends, fellow competitors, people I watched run later on etc. On your point, yes Newbury Park is remarkably close to a spot on that all time list.

Totally agree with all this, don't see this record being broken for a long, long time, just felt the need the point out that if every NXN winning team treated this as a premier event the record books would not be so sparse (nothing to do with NPHS, but the 4xmile is just not a serious event in the same way the 4x4 or 4x8 are at the high school level)

Where do they live?

If NP can find a good replacement for Colin, they might even break this record next season. 3 of them are juniors.

HS Metric Mile = 1600 meters

Even adjusting for 1600m to the mile (x100.6%) adds about 1.4s to the faster guys. Overall American Fork's runners ran above peak, considering their more recent PRs are not significantly faster, even years later.

I’m not criticizing his coaching, more so how he goes about it/his personality. He loves the limelight and I generally don’t like people like that. That’s all. Let the kids be the stars.

I don’t doubt he’s doing special things with these kids, but let’s save the “magical” for when these two families are no longer at NP.
