I haven't seen mention of the time he allegedly stopped on the track to help a fallen runner. He was en route to a record time. Wrong guy?
The video linked in the first page shows when he stopped in the 1956 Australian national championships to help Ron Clarke. He then made up the entire distance to the lead pack and then some, winning by an amazing thirty yards. He was a fine man, humble, and was certainly the fastest time trialer of his day. Bannister had tremendous speed, by contrast, but held it until he needed it, probably because he trained so lightly, not doing much more than 5M in 30 minutes on 10x440y in 60s with 440y jog rest in 2 minutes on his lunch breaks.
