I also believe this rumor to be untrue. You'd have to be really dumb to think Sahlman breaking 14 for a 5K would mean anything to anyone in the know, seeing as he is clearly in at least 13:45 shape right now.
He's ahead of his teammate Lex Young who just ran 7:57 flat for 3K.
Sahlman right now:
3:58 mile
7:54 3K
13:40-13:45 5K
By the end of outdoor:
3:55 mile
8:24 (2 mile)

People said the same thing about Drew Hunter. In my opinion going to college is always better than going pro out of high school. Unless you're Jakob.
Unless you have a time machine, you don't know. And nearly every time, they earn way more money by going pro.
Agreed on the concern for Kessler. In hindsight Adidas (and their track record with HS phenoms) may not have been the best choice. I know that staying with Ron was probably the impetus for that but then why go off to NAU for the fall only to not run with Mike Smith and the guys?
As someone else has already pointed out as well, for his events, he has already surpassed Willis and Ferlick. He needs training partners who can push him to faster times and Adidas has no training groups.
A deal with OAC would have made more sense if they could have worked out a way to keep Ron in the loop, as I'm sure Dathan and Ron know each other. He could have been training with Hoare, Beamish & Klecker these last 7 or 8 months.
There's got to be a way to rectify this situation. Can Tracksmith or Adidas sign a few international types who can push Hobbs while training in Michigan under Ron? Maybe.
It seems that this thread is primarily about whether or not it is a good idea to run in the NCAA. A topic worth discussing, for sure, but people are very often going to be biased by what they did themselves. And most of you on this Board did do it, are planning to, or (maybe a few readers) tried and failed to do it. If collegiate running was your goal and plan all through your teens, it has an importance that you may subconsciously transfer to everyone else.
The best short discussion on this question that I've read is found at the end of 'Sub 4' by Chris Lear. Many of you will be familiar with his 'Running With The Buffaloes' so we know the author is pretty into the whole college team idea. He interviews both El G and Lagat and asks what they think about this topic. Unremarkably, Lagat says the NCAA is a great experience and stepping stone to pro running. He did it himself, after all.
El G and his coach, on the other hand said the opposite. ....."not good at all" were the World Record holder's exact words. I'm sure most of you are aware that he didn't participate in the NCAA himself.
I don't see any world where coach Brosnan will go to Tinman. Newbury Park and Tinman Elite could not be more different from each other.
Hobbes was one of the best 1500m runners in the country as a High School senior, and had the best mentors and coaches possible. I think he made the right decision.
Kessler committed to NAU before he was state champ. Sahlman committed to NAU just before he won nationals. There is a difference.

Now this is 100% true. If you know Tinman and know Brosnan you know they couldn't be anymore different in coaching styles, workouts, philosophy , etc

agreed. He hasn't made a jump in performance that one would reasonably expect one year after running 3:57 as a teen. It could be that he simply reached his ceiling much quicker than most. Or he might still come through as one of the greatest talents the US has ever had. Outdoor season will tell us a lot about which way it's gonna go.

The problem with going pro straight out of high-school is you are turning down a free education. Seriously, this board is hugely myopic when it comes to this. You have the best colleges in the country offering you scholarships. Your athletic career will only make up a tiny proportion of your life and unless you are a world beater, you arent going to make a fortune. If you are good enough, you'll still have huge deals waiting for you post collegiate and you'll have set yourself up post post-athletics with an education. The most likely thing is that you won't be one of the best in the world though but by going the NCAA route, you will have secured yourself a debt free start to your adult life which is huge while also securing your future.
that makes a few massive assumptions:
1) he is getting a full ride right out of HS
2) his pro deal doesn't include college payments
3) he doesnt take a single college course during his pro career
There are legitimate arguments for going to the NCAA vs going pro right away, but the cost of an education is not one of them.
Too early to tell. One does not compare a June US trials performance to some January indoor meets.
Surprisingly, the 3:57 yesterday was an indoor pb, so he is right where he needs to be with whole outdoor season to show improvement.

INgebrigtsen, kiplimo, kipchoge and so many more prove that is NOT the case.
I think a lot of it has to do with how inactive young kids have become.
They get to 7th grade and sign up for XC and they can't handle any training.
Without that base they can't improve in high school.
They get to college- increase mileage and get injured.
They don't have to run, necessarily, as little kids but play, run around, like we used to.
