Supply and demand, coach. For a rental truck on 1/23 from Austin to San Jose it costs $1,478 (10' truck) $1,555(15'), $1,712(20'), $1,944(26'). To go the other way(from SJ to Austin on the same day) is $4,514 (10'), $4,752(15'), $5,940 (20'), $7,128 (26').

Per AAA, the current average price per gallon in California is $4.645/gal, in Texas it's 3.005/gal.
I assure you it has nothing to do supply and demand.
