People live with those comorbidities for years and years and then they get COVID and die from lung or other organ failures, and they die at such rates that the United States as a whole has a 2+ year drop in life expectancy for the first time in 100 years. Total deaths are way up and almost none have to do with the vaccine, which has saved well over 200,000 lives so far. If COVID deaths were fixed then they wouldn't vary so markedly from the fewer than 300 a day last spring prior to Delta to the over 2,000 a day now occurring over the past 7 days.

2) COVID-19 (U071, Underlying Cause of Death)
The former is all deaths that have COVID on the death certificate whereas the latter is the deaths where COVID is the underlying cause, as judged by the overseeing doctor.
They have week-by-week tally for both of these going back to Jan 2021 and through 1/19/2022.
If we sum all the weeks for both codes for the whole country we get:

COVID-19 (U071, Underlying Cause of Death): 766,390
Thus, 90.6% of COVID deaths have COVID as the underlying cause of death. Nothing made up here.
