I don't think that Kipchoge is saying that athletes should abstain from alcohol. I think he is seeing a lot for Kenyan pro runners getting swept up by the money and status that comes with going from someone whose future would be either a potato farmer or prison guard to having enough money to buy a farm and be financially independent for life. Most agents and managers in Kenya do not care whether their athletes have a long career as there is always going to be another 13 flat 5k runner coming up every year. So, a lot of young runners go out and party and drink too much. They become alcoholics and then get tossed aside by their managers and agents when their performance suffers.

I'm a fan of kipchoge but certainly not a fan of this rant. Not everyone has to live by your rules, Eliud. And you want to talk about integrity when you are very likely doping by running performances which are past the natural human capability level that the other dopers can't even touch. Come on dude.

Pretty amazing all the hobby joggers here triggered by Kipchoge saying to be the best in the world you shouldn’t drink alcohol.

People are judged by their factual and political beliefs here, and everywhere else, in America constantly. If someone tells you they believe the 2020 election was stolen and recite some facts in support of that, they will be judged. Alcohol is worse for you than any illegal drug. It's amazing how people are oblivious to this. It's worse than heroin or meth from a health point of view.

Yikes this is false on several levels. Sure, since they are legal and used my many people, nicotine and alcohol are certainly the most damaging at a societal level. Also, research is realizing that no amount of alcohol is "good" for you, and can cause more problems the more you drink.

That being said, the recent meta-analyses show that there isn't really a statistical difference in health outcomes between zero drinks a day and one drink a day. Additionally, most people can and do moderate their alcohol usage.

Meth or heroin is terrible for you, and on top of that - most people are not casual users of these drugs. They become full blown addicted, compounding those negative health effects.

I don't drink but was impressed when I toured the Miller Brewery Museum in Milwaukee that displayed a marketing sign from the past that promoted beer as liquid bread.

A bad thing is getting hammered on mixed drinks made with a lot of sugar. Strawberry daiquiris, for example. That is stupid. No serious drinker does that. I have good values and much character. I prefer a Tanqueray Martini, very dry.

Quick reminder to not take advice from specialists, let alone athletes. The best ones are typically the ones with the most empty brains. He probably also says tsk-tsk for the dwindling numbers of religious people too. He is good at his thing, but also remember he said something about the shoes having very little to do with his performance. I don't ask Aaron Rodgers for health advice either. Thanks kip, keep cranking out great performances, but I will not subscribe to the moral panic.
