But given his mentality I think he will at best run an other 3:39 1500. I don't think he will stay healthy and focused long enough to go that low.
he should just move up. he's got a good build for longer distance. wasn't his dad a decent marathoner? he could bust his ass trying to get back to 1:49 shape and probably get injured, or he could keep focusing on aerobic work and build volume and maybe have a shot at the trials at 5 or 10K. either way he won't know til he tries.

A low-key time trial is the environment that most runners would prefer if going for time. And with a camera on you and a new team you're trying to impress, it's not like the adrenaline isn't there.

Something people like about him- he’s real - unguarded. He was saying this stuff like within a minute of finishing- the kind of things you might think to yourself to make yourself believe you could hold the pace for another k- it’s not like a press conference where an athlete is concerned about what to say and how to present oneself. It’s like we are there with a friend. That’s why people watch. I don’t think it makes him any less tough.
Yeah, running 66% of a goal race, in the cold, in trainers, with no competitive atmosphere, with two shirts on, is fine with me. His "excuses" are relevant and justified.
Some people are actually not workout heroes and actually do significantly better with competition.
I actually give him more credit for doing the 2k as scheduled. I think a time trial in trainers, in 45 degree temps and rain, with almost no work at the pace is great. I certainly would not have done this time trial in these conditions back when I was running.
I just wish the 3k was at least 2 weeks out instead of 1 week so he could get more acclimated to 65s. I like him for about 8:08-8:12. Or, better yet, if he were running a 5k.
