He probably would have continued because he would have had opportunity to make money.
He WAS popular when he was alive. I was in 10th grade when he died. We had practice and considered cancelling. But, we did a a hard workout to honor him. Yeah, it's corny high school stuff but it was what it was.
I DO agree that he would not have been the legend he is- just another great American runner.
TBH, I liked what he did for the sport when he surged in popularity years back.
It got a lot of young people interested.
I remember high school girls that I coached like him because of his looks.
