It’s true, but we would have written the same of Herb Elliott. People with immense success many times dont realize how fortunate they have been. It is also true that if the love Id not present, then it is only like a job (as he states). When he reaches the paramount of success, perhaps he will choose another venue to spend his energy in. All of norway is proud of him.
Elliott was running free of charge and had a truly wacky coach. We don't know what was behind his decision to retire at such a young age.
1500m stars like Coe, Ovett, Keino, El G, Walker and Scott all continued to compete at that distance into their 30s. Their training was no less difficult than what Jakob is doing.
Elliott was simply burned out. He had reached the pinnacle of success (wr mile/1500, oly gold) and saw himself as having nowhere to go.
His training at Portsea Friday through Sunday with Cerutty was extremely hard, and I think with a new wife and business opportunities, he just wanted to get on with his life.
It would be nice to see Jakob compete until 2028; but I think 2024/25 will be the end. He has already been living like a science experiment since age 6, and by 2024 will have been training 18 years. If Walker/Coe began their training at age 15, then it seems to equal out a bit more.
