It may also be Paul Cummings - you can barely see the top of his head behind what looks like Nick Rose in the middle of the photo.
Now isn't this more fun than the juvenile name-calling threads?

Definetly Steve Scott in the back, US record holder in the mile.
What really bugs me is none of our running mags today cover the great races like they use to. Remember in the 80's when you would have 5 or 6 page articles about the major marathons or road races like Falmouth? Not to mention true indepth articles about the top runners themselves. Now we get a little blurb about the race or simply photos with some captions, and in depth articles about Oprah or some newscaster who just broke 30 minutes for 5k. If it wasn't for sites like this no one would know anything about what was happening in elite running, and kids would have nothing to aspire to and no one to idolize. Maybe that is another reason why high school running has started to pick up again in the last few years, the internet has given kids back what we use to have in the 80's.
My favorite photo is Pfitzinger way out in front of a tight pack. Why did no one go with him, or was it a race for second and third? Was he a dark horse no one took seriously until that race?
Glenn gets the second answer. That race had some serious depth when Steve was that far back with a solid pack in front.
I don't recall the details, but I believe that Pfitz was a pretty serious dark horse. Took some balls.
great photos---anybody notice Centrowitz in one of the first group shots, the 10k?
Great points made here.
I had a serious discussion with Amby Burfoot several years ago about why Runner's World didn't do the sort of articles described by mjmchase above.
Basically his response was about magazine economics, and who buys magazines. Hence the cover photos and content. RW is not geared to the people writing on this thread or who read Letsrun.com, but to Joe Jogger and Sally Strider who want to read an in depth article about "the relative merits of Evian versus Perrier for the athlete," or similar fodder.
The picture of the pack in the 1982 New Haven 20k has Dave Babiracki in the pack (the one in the Sub-4 jersey). Babiracki's son is a top prep in California this year having run 4:10 for 1600m.
ok, in the 1980 10K National Championship photo, who is in the picture...left to right?
Bill Rodgers
some AW dude that name that slips my mind
Matt Centrowitz
Tom Wysocki
1208?
Who is (somewhat visible) 5,6,13?

John Flora is AW
6 Paul Williams, Nick Rose just to the right.
13 might be Terry Baker?
Also, behind Rod Dixon back a ways is Tom Fleming and behind him is Steve Scott.......
