Hilarious! Simone Biles named TIME’s 2021 Athlete of the Year

Time is not a sports publication. We already have Espy and SI so why does Time need to do a sports award unless they bring something different for people to talk about? If they give the award to Tom Brady does anyone notice or care? Biles serves exactly their goal to get people talking and pay attention to them.

Too much politics in sports these days. But of course these media companies are desperate to sell their product, so I would not expect anything other than this pathetic display you see here. Absolutely insufferable nonsense.

Not commenting on whether she deserved the award or not as I haven't read the criteria and it doesn't appear to be a straightforward performance award, but with regard to the other things/trolling, her teammates don't seem to agree with everyone. They are right behind her, including Sunisa Lee.

Is the award more about impact/how influential someone has been?

Also Caeleb Dressel had 5 golds, 3 of which were individual. Lee, Ledecky and Dressel all have a compelling case.

I’m assuming they must have decided they’ll be assigning the award like the “Person of The Year” award, where it’s not necessarily the “best” but the most impactful for better or worse. Soft. TIME is too entrenched in “culture”. But at least Sports Illustrated made Lee and Dressel their AOYs.

Time magazine is not a sports magazine, so they don't care about who jumped far or ran fast. What they care about is influence and Simon Biles is a lot more influential than any other athlete this year. Have some understanding, it takes guts to openly come out with molestation allegations and she carries an important message - mental health is just as important as physical health.

What's Time magazine? Is that like barstool sports?

This is the single worst choice for athlete of the year since they started doing this. Slap in the face to all athletes who persevere and achieve despite uncomfortable or unfavorable circumstances.

Mental health is a thing that shouldn't be stigmatized, but this is going the complete opposite way with it. Pretty nutty to me, but it is to be expected in this sinking ship of a country.

Tom Brady has 10.4 million instagram followers (14.3 million according to another source) and 7.7 million twitter followers. It's pretty easy to conclude he'd bring attention. He actually was deserving as well, with a record 7th Super Bowl title in his mid 40s.

Elaine Thompson Herah is another fine choice, except for the questions you might raise about those performances, but then the same would be said of the Ethiopian record holder.

Among swimmers, Caleb Dressel would be the choice with the five golds.
