Actually... studies suggest publicizing suicides leads to an increase in suicides. There's a term for copycat suicides after highly publicized suicides called the Werther Effect.

I see ZERO evidence that this was a suicide. Maybe wait a bit before playing an armchair coroner.
I remember meeting him at brooks pr when I was competing. Such a nice guy with words of wisdom to give. Sad to hear this news.
This is actually not true at all. Strange as it sounds, suicide is contagious. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK207262/

Generally most people die much later in life than 38
I met Matt in ~2012 at Icahn Stadium when he was in his peak as a pacer. There had been an interview with Rudisha a couple of weeks before where he had praised Scherer for how helpful and perfect he was. When I questioned Matt if he had heard about that comment and what he thought about it, he only said, "oh, wow. He really said that?"
Seemed like such a hard working and humble guy. Prayers go out to his family and friends. The running community lost a great dude.
if that's your point you should always link to the suïcide prevention line, like the way advertisements are incorporated in this MB, in threads like these.

Get it through your bleedin' head, rojo, that THE WORLD DOESN'T HAVE TO KNOW WHAT KILLED MATT SCHERER! The medical examiner and police need to know, and his family would want to know, but readers of a message board don't need to know. Your ridiculous "I've never understood why people don't think just like I do" way of reacting is a cause for concern, as it reeks of narrow mindedness.
This. Anyone who has had a friend take his/her life would agree. If you need to know, you would have been told already. If the information isn't for public broadcast, and you are unable to respect that, you surely won't be told.
Yeah. I agree with you Malmo.
While it is human nature to wonder, to speculate is improper. I know a guy who died in his 30s due to an undetected heart condition. Sometimes younger people die.
RIP. By all accounts Matt was a great person; seeing one aspect of him in his pacing was a gift. His pacing track record - there is a spreadsheet floating around that he himself may have prepared, and that documents all of his pacing efforts and shows his incredible ability to run right on the targeted splits - is without compare.
Suicide is #5 right now for the 35-44 age group behind accidents, COVID, cancer and heart disease. None should jump to conclusions. Regardless, he was a fine runner and we should respect his families privacy.
