You can not right-associate multiplication before the division according to BODMAS, which does put D and M on the same footing provided you go left to right. The rule is left to right. The rule is not whatever one you encounter wherever you encounter it. If you have a problem following rules, that sounds like a personal problem and likely that you also suck at math.

Pedants who think they are smart because they remembered PEMDAS without having to google it. They think other people didn't. Very much a "when you only have a hammer, every problem is a nail". Their hammer is PEMDAS. They want it to be simple because that would make them smart and right.

They CANNOT wrap their heads around the fact that this specific formula is NOT unambigous and that is precisely why it is popular on the internet. Because they are relying on their 2nd grade understanding of math.

You can simplify to 6 ÷ 2 x 3 and get 9.

You can also simplify 2(1+2) to 2(3) to 6.

"÷" is the only operation outside of parentheses in this equation.

PEMDAS or BODMAS was what they taught you as a strategy to solve equations in school because it worked for those equations at that time. You can use it still. It is not a mathematical law.

It isn't remotely confusing. Multiplication and division have the same priority and go left to right. When using PEMDAS it is up to you to remember the groupings. You would have to have sleep through class to not know this

I already told you on page 1 there is no left to right rule. You can solve 1 *2*3 correctly starting from the right side because order doesn't matter with multiplication and division.

When pressed as to why this is ambiguous and why some think that the answer is 1, I would still say the ambiguity is actually right there in the formula, but not because multiplication and division are both the third priority (after parentheses and exponents), since they are co-equivalent, and not because we don't understand that we work from left to right for co-equivalent functions. No, if we have multiplication and division, we work left to right, same for addition or subtraction. Rather, the ambiguity consists in the meaning of doing the parenthetical operation first. The fact that the 2 is next to the parentheses implies that it is so connected to the parentheses that multiplying the parenthetical result by the 2 must be done after adding the numbers in the parentheses.

When you write 2(1+2), the connection seems there, whereas it seems weaker with what should be equivalent, 2*(1+2), yet the notion of dealing first with everything concerning parentheses suggests you should clean that up first, i.e. get 2(3) or 6, and then do the division to get 1. The more I think of it, the less I can remember handling an operation outside parentheses prior to dealing with whatever is directly involved with the parentheses.

I think you're saying that we should just rewrite it as 6x(1/2)x3, and get 9. I still think the parens means we need to solve it as 6/(3x2). But a convention has to be chosen for such problems.

Sounds like you are not very smart and unwilling to learn. A convention has already been chosen for hundreds of years.

But following traditional 5th grade algebra and PE(MD)(AS), the answer is 9. Mult/Div and Add/Sub have the same priority and you just move left to right. So this is just 3 * 3 = 9.
