Cheptegai wins the 5000m with ONLY a 55.10 last lap. Would have lost to Jakob easily.

Last time I checked Jakob couldnot even break 13:02 in a championship race. Dude only could run 59.7 on that last lap also so it isn't like he is a big kicker....

Obviously Jakob is capable of a much faster last lap 59.7. I don't know what happened in his 13:02 race, but assuming everyone in a race has the same amount left in the tank, I like his chances.

I think Barega and Jakob would have had a good shot, but given how easy Cheptegei made that look (basically pulled the Mo Farah and just accelerated any time anyone got on his shoulder) I don't doubt he could have gone a little bit faster if he needed do, and in the 10,000 to me it seemed like he was closing on Barega the whole last lap, just put himself in really horrible position before the bell -- there were 3-5 runners between him and Selemon and he was probably 5 meters back.

I think he and Selemon are a very good match -- Jakob would've been right there with them, but I don't see him as quite on Cheptegei and Barega's level in the 5000 yet.

Nothing more beautiful at LRC than a fanboy speculating. Classic.

No it isn't obvious. Nobody who could have fun faster just let's 4 people run around him so he finishes 5th. Jakob has some fast time but there is no evidence he is a big kicker...

What qualifies as a big kicker? That 'fast time' (12:48.45) was closed in 4:01.45 [27.25/56.0], the final 400m within the neighborhood of tonight's medalists in a race 10 seconds faster.

Beijing 2008 - 80f with 58 dewpoint.

London 2012 - 65f with 54 dewpoint.

Rio 2016 - 73f with 63 dewpoint.

Tokyo 2021 - 82f, with 77 dewpoint.

can't be asked to go back any further. Hotter than Rio/London/Beijing, and way more humid. Guys like Justyn Knight and Katir ran low 12:50s in Rome but couldn't crack 13 today. Not saying Farah couldn't have won gold, but pointing out why straight comparisons are so flawed.

Also worth adding, that the hotter/humid it is it's usually the bigger, more muscular guys who struggle first. Could definitely a guy like Jakob being effected harder (see Katir) than guys like Ahmed who could genuinely weigh 20-30lbs less than Jakob.

Ingebrigtsen also closed a 13:02 in 53 at London DL 2019. Anyone saying he can’t kick is an idiot. The heat/humidity might have killed him today, but that would be the only reason to doubt him. He crushed these guys in Florence.

Not trying to take anything away from Cheptegei. I’m happy to see the world record holder pick up Olympic gold.

Because he would never have considered running a different race approach with others in the mix? Silly posting. He ran against the field that came, and he won.

Easily? Jakob hasn't exactly looked great in the 1500 heats. Barega got him by .4 in the 10k. Tough conditions (hot/humid) & an honest pace (sub-13). Farrah was closing in what, 53? & that was in better conditions off of a slow pace? I guess a silver & gold double just isn't good enough for some people. Guessing he's been banged up too after the record attempts. Hasn't looked like himself & still threw down at the Olympics while dealing with who knows what.

Also I'm sure it's been said but his last 1600 was right at 4:00-flat, last 2k in ~5:03. That's pretty incredible, again, in these conditions.

Fairly certain Bekele in 2008 had a faster last 4 laps (3:57), faster overall time, wasn’t challenged at all last lap (celebrated with 150m to go and shut down well before finish line). He also led almost 9 laps of the race
