Bowerman got it from Lydiard. When he received recognition from JFK on the American running boom Bowerman said, "I am merely the disciple, Arthur Lydiard of New Zealand is the profit."

Lydiard got it from a combination of Jack Dolan, and Emil Zatopek and much from self-experimentation.
