Chelimo admitted he impeded. Chelimo pushed them outside. They could either slow down and stay in the lane, jostle with Chelimo, or move outside.

Chelimo also left his lane on the final straightaway.

Chelimo is world class. Fisher and Kincaid are national class. Maybe they will amke the jump but they havent yet.

Nobody's whining. Chelimo deliberately violated 2 rules. Chelimo had a dust up with Mead earlier in the race for much less.

Yeah it should have and would have been a DQ if the only runners impeded didn’t happen to be the ones that qualified. Had cooper gotten into the top three this would have been disputable

Turns out from my read USATF Rules say you're supposed to run straight to the finish but World Athletics rules don't.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Considering this is a Trial to pick the Olympic team I think the WA rules should be used.

But 2020 handbook does have this

163 3 "Each competitor shall run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway in all races of two or more turns unless there is another competitor in his or her path"

World Athletics has no such rule.

Fisher clearly slows down to avoid Chelimo as he cuts Fisher off all the way in lane 4. Watch him enter the home straight in lane 1.

Also it says "direct line" and not "shortest path to the finish". Maybe that's why some are saying he shouldn't bd DQ unless he wasn't swerving in and out.

He drift out and kept drifting out. He didn't then swerve back inside and cut someone off. Technically not a "direct line" as I'm sure it wasn't a perfect tangent but if they DQ him for this everyone who drifted into lane 2 should be DQd as well.

This is big boy racing and it's allowed by WA rules.

Chelimo more or less ran in a "direct line" from the time he entered the final straight. He didn't swerve, and he continued to run "direct[ly]" across four lanes. His intentions to move to the side were clear, and instead of maintaining their own direct line, Fisher and Kincaid actually deviated from their lines to try and move on the outside of Chelimo. Dumb decision in my eyes, you should know that lanes 1, 2, and 3 will be open when Chelimo does that. Everyone saying that Chelimo should be DQ'd must accept that Fisher and Kincaid should be DQ for impeding each other during the final 100m as well! Their lines were much less direct than Chelimo, as they looked lost for strategy and reacted to Chelimo.

You asked why he might be dq’d, someone clearly provides two rules supporting it, and now you don’t even know what rules the Olympic trials are being run under? You run a running website. Yes bunch of snowflakes here. Chelimo savvy racing. Grant could’ve gone crazy to take the lead at 350 or called his bluff and waited for him to drift far enough to pass him on the inside. Either way Chelimo was a meter clear the last 60 meters.

The Bernard Lagat 2007 WC title over Kipchoge was more DQ worthy than this.

DQ would have been warranted, but I don't really see a successful protest here.

Most contacts have a variety of bonuses based on performance. National champion usually has a bonus, and it is higher than second. USATF also gives awards, but first is usually only a few thousand more than 2nd, so not a big difference there.

But there would be a motivation to file a protest. I would give 50-50 if that protest was upheld, this wasn't the most egregious drift to block a runner, but it wasn't the most subtle either. Neither runner behind him seemed too impeded, if they had been more obviously cut off, it would be more clear cut as a potential DQ.

I just got home from a bike ride and watched my recording of this race. After the finish, I thought, "What!?! Did he just run them all the way out to lane 4?" Sure enough, he did. I came over here to see if he'd been DQ'd and found this thread.

Fisher was forced to change lanes. Therefore, Fisher was impeded so Chelimo should be DQ'd.

I totally agree with you Rojo. Everyone knows Chelimo as a troll and he’s always toying with the field. He pretty much got into everyone’s head and that’s where the weakness shows on other athletes.

Chelimo is a world class runner he’s gonna use everything to his advantage to win and qualify.
