Are you an Olympian if you make the Olympic team

You are an Olympian once you post your Olympic Rings tattoo on Instagram. Anything after that moment are mere details. Its all about the tattoo.

Exactly. By definition an Olympian is a participant of the Olympic Games

If I make the top 3 at the trials, I'm an Olympic team member.

If I in turn compete at the games, I am then an Olympian.

If I am injured and withdraw, or don't make the OT qualifying time, I'm back to being a team member, and that's it.

You can believe whatever you want but if an athlete makes an Olympic team they are an Olympian. If you're a bench player on a championship team and don't play a minute does that mean you're not part of a championship team? You're blaming the athlete for getting injured and not being able to run? Seriously? Do you think any athlete wants to get injured?

Graduating means 'successfully completing an academic degree'; does NOT mean attending a graduation ceremony.

I am pretty positive that anyone who RUNS in a preliminary heat or the final gets a medal. If you do not run any heat, I don't believe you get one.

They did not compete.

I may be giving away too much personal information here but here goes:

I competed in an Olympic distance Triathlon once. I am a self declared Olympian. Its disingenuous but correct in a way.

I also won the Boston (UK) marathon 6 years ago.

I have "Olympian, Boston marathon winner" on my Instagram and now have 577K followers. I am able to monetise this and was able to quit my job to be a full time (albeit only 2:34) marathon runner.

What you actually are doesn't really matter. What matters is what other people think you are.

The Olympics is not a pro event. You must must compete at the games to be an Olympian. You can get a DQ, false start, DNF, and foul out to still be an Olympian in addition to doing your respective discipline.

How do the people taking a hard line on this feel about the people who "qualify" for the 100 meter dash, which allows every Olympic member country one entry? You would consider these folks Olympians, but someone who qualifies for the US team, attends the opening ceremony, and then gets COVID or something and can't compete is not?

I think you're an Olympian once you are at the Olympics as part of your National team. Qualifying for the Olympic team is not in of itself enough IMO to be considered an Olympian.

I was selected to coach a team at a multisport games (not the Olympics) that I needed to withdraw from last minute for external reasons. I consider myself as having been "selected" as a coach of that team, but I don't consider myself to have been a coach of that team.

An individual I know self-identifies as an Olympian. As a member of a relay squad, that person never competed in rounds or finals and never stood on the podium with teammates. There is no indication of this individual in the official record.

This kind of thinking is why sometimes an athlete will line up while they are injured instead of giving their spot to the alternate.
