Nah Teare was in full control. He didn’t care where he finished, as long as he qualified.

Yeah, if they qualify at all I wouldn't read too much into it. Those who did not qualify, then you should be concerned.

A little concerning he was only able to close in 1:00 on a pace more than 30 seconds slower than his PR, a race where he closed in 58. I didn’t watch the race so can anyone shed some light on what happened here?
His 13:24 was in cool conditions and was not tactical. How much experience does he have in a tactical championship style 5K in those conditions. XC is completely different than a tactical 5K on the track. And most of those guys have much faster 1500 prs.
A lot of guys struggled today, like most of the Stanford guys. And even Teare did not look great. He does need to develop speed but these kinds of races are the learning experiences he need to become a better track runner.
Well said, written.

the430miler talked about this at length but his thread got removed.
Because it's body shaming and if everyone is going to have a go at Al Sal for telling Mary Cain to lose weight you cant then say Nico needs to hit the weights it's the same principle

All you guys look at this as a negative thing he didn't make NCAA's. It's they best thing for Nico.. He needs to learn to race and make the right decisions in races moving forwarded. I have a feeling the Olympic Trials we will see a little different Nico. Lot's of really good guys choked in this race besides Nico. He and his coach can put things in perspective and be more ready next time. The great thing for Nico racing these tactical races is his ability to hopefully learn from them. He is one of the greatest talents ever in cross country and distance. Remember Galen didn't do great things until he was a junior. Nico is the American Junior record holder and who will be running the Olympic trials in the 5000m in a few weeks. NO one in the US at 18 has ever run as fast as Nico.

Well said... he has 3 more years to improve his tactics and having some setbacks early on will only make him a smarter, more driven runner.

Cool narrative.
Still won't change the fact that Nico lacks closing speed.
Has no chance at 5k at Oly trials. Or at NCAA 5k now or next year.
10k and up?? ....still lacks closing speed to win tactical races.
.....Not to mention his American Jr record will be short lived.
Good news for Nico??....His future superstar teammate who was going to overshadow him next year just ran a 3:34.
.....Meaning Hobbs Kessler may likely skip the NCAA entirely since he just blew away the fastest ever NCAA 1500 record before even starting college.

So? He should quit running because there is someone potentially faster than him and he lacks closing speed?

He's 18 and the closing speed will come. The kid is amazing
and I doubt Hobbs even runs in college.
Young ran 13:24

Aerobic machine with mediocre speed
Needs to focus on longer distances.
Despite HS success and impressive PRs, doesn't have closing speed anywhere near the current crop of mid d studs in the 5k at NCAA level
Will continue to improve PRs but no way is Nico Young ever going to outkick Hocker, Teare or especially his soon to be teammate (or maybe soon to go pro instead) Hobbs Kessler

Yeah... I mean Herrera from Colorado has had a damn good season and he didn't make the cut either.
It's tough out there - good running by all the athletes!
So many people flipping out over this race. There is a learning curve to running any race and yes this includes the 5000. How many has Nico Y. even competed in? Was this his 3rd or 4th? And then there is the learning curve to running events with trials. Hell, the kid is only 19 and he's not fully developed yet. Now they realize at the upcoming Olympics trials the semi's in the 5000 could be a kryponite for him and they need to adjust how he is going to operate. No big deal. Him not making NCAAs is giving him a bit more time to train, rest and prepare for the trials and who cares....Don't they get this track season back anyway due to COVID?

There is no learning curve. Either you can keep up or you can't. If a runner has something left, he's going to have a strong finish.

I actually don’t think they get this track season for free. They got XC for free since it was a little wonky, but idk about track.

Nico doesn’t turn 19 until July. He’s still 18.

I looked up the times of the guys that beat Young and most of them aren't particularly fast at 1500/mile. With 13:24 ability, Young should have qualified. He just had a bad day.

The runner Nico reminds me most of is Ritz. Great at XC but no real change of gear. Ritz could never be competitive in championship races at 5K but he still held the AR. Nico is a tremendous talent and racing 5Ks will help hone his racing tactics but his real future is 10K and longer.

Nico Young will be fine as a collegiate athlete and after that as a pro, and most certainly doesnt need any advice around here...
