What is wrong with you?? Shoes are not helping runners run sub 9 minute in high school. Is every high school runner even running a 9:00 mile..you didn't smh. They have a great coach. Shoes help with recovery during workouts but you still need the ability to run such workouts..which not every high schooler does

Colin seems more talented than the Young twins. Apparently he picked up a minor injury 2 weeks ago and missed a week of training leading up to this race. To run 8:43 after that is insane and shows he could be capable of sub 8:40 this year. He’s about where Nico was at this point in 2019. However, I still think Nico is more talented than all of them.

Newbury Park 5x3200 meter 8:54.02 team average is the national record. No prep team has ever average faster for five high schoolers on 1-team... and it looks to go down farther if not this year but in the years to come.
Newbury Park has established themselves as perhaps, the Greatest Prep boys distance PROGRAM in terms of "performance" in US history. IF you thought Nico was GREAT... LEX!

I would agree that their coach is doing amazing things. Drop Sean Brosnan in to pretty much any program in the US and he will have them significantly improved in a five year stretch of time. He seems to be very dedicated (spends a ton of time on it) which is really hard to do especially if you have a family. He also has built an amazing culture.
That being said, there is no way this level of talent exists outside of maybe one or two schools nationally. They have a group of massively talented kids who have a super dedicated coach and a ton of other factors which has led to this success. I do not think Newbury Park or any school could maintain what they are currently doing for any long stretch of time. But I'm sure they will continue to have success relative to other programs as long as the coach stays and continues doing what he is doing.

He has similar coaching ideas as Scott Simmons from the America Distance Project. The ideas and philosophies work only a matter of time before his whole roster is under 9. I was trained similar and went from a 32:57 10,000m to 30:04 in one seaon then 29:05. Brosnan is taking in innovative approach that works. Unlike other high school coaches that train like an after school baby sitter.

So maybe the real question is what good coaches do to find the talent in their school and get them to join the track team.
My high school was chock full of state-level swimmers...but not all that great distance-wise. 3000 students in a healthy, wealthy city but not ever, not in 90+ years has anyone broken 9:00.
but we won everything in swimming. Tells you that the variable here is getting people onto the team in the first place.

A good HS coach can convince them to run in HS.
I think we are talking about 3 families. The gene pool is unmatched. Add training and altitude. Nobody is going to match this, not even the future NP teams.

True, but a much easier starting place. You gotta coach’em up, but it’s a whole lot easier when they and their families are already into it and in many cases moved to school specifically to run.
If you build it, they will come......and Brosnan has built it......
Most actually came before it was really built, but that’s not his fault. He’s coached’em up. As many have said on these boards, it will be interesting to see how they do once this current group cycles through.

Actually none came before Brosnan. He coached them since their freshman year. He has also built the girls program up to NXN and State Champs. I think we forget about the girls.
In a documentary, Brosnan spoke about having to kick team members off the swings at the local park while they were on their training runs, so it has taken time to instill his brand of culture on the students. Making kids believe and buy into your program is essential. When he said "4:20 is not fast for hs" he was ripped, but he has proved successful in clearing out the preconceptions that chain students to comfortable dreams of performance. Even Lex Young last weekend was astounded at his performance nearly knocking off Colin.
