The cancelled 2020 after the NBA and MLB shut down. Similarly, they'll take their cue - MLB and the NFL will be back to full capacity in a lot of places by October, and other events will follow.
Yeah we'll see what happens. It's always possible they change course if the situation on the ground changes. Everyone here is pessimistic, which I get. Maybe the race will be spread thin with all of the big domestic races in a short period. Perhaps people can choose 2022 over 2021 if they'd rather run on Patriots Day and do a more traditional Fall Marathon. I was gonna be borderline to make it anyhow, but it's a bummer that the field size isn't just full with everyone having access to a vaccine who wants it by that time.
I don’t think this will get me much more if any more elbow room at 2:40 pace. Those runners aren’t getting left out.
Move the race to Texas or Florida where there is competent leadership.

Going to be competitive as hell to get in, which will make the race fun. But what are the chances it actually happens? Maybe 50%?

I ran a flat marathon in BQ-6 in the window so I don't feel bad about it.
I really don't understand the value of capping it at 20k. At that point, if they can have a 20k person even, you'd think an addition 10k is pretty irrelevant at that point, no?

I don't get why they can't just use the age bracket someone was in when they ran the time based on the original scheduled race dates? I should be in either way at 13 or 18 minutes under but it's going to screw a ton of people.

I ran my qualifier in November of 2018 for the 2020 race. I was -2:25. Keep in mind they dropped the times for each age group five minutes in September of 2018. 2020 would have been my first Boston (and realistically my only one). It was postponed...then canceled...then virtual.
I am recognizing my bias in this next statement, but I am going to make it. The 2021 slots should be filled by first-time 2020 and 2021 qualifiers. With all that has happened since March of 2020, it would be very rewarding to have a field that was a vast majority of first-time qualifiers.
As I stated, I realize my bias...simply stating my opinion. Feel free to attack at will :)
That will put you in the first corral (I hope, my qualifier was 2:40:30), where you should have plenty of room within a few hundred yards of the start. Even more space if they do some kind of rolling start. The big change will be that you won't have to wait in such long lines for the busses and bathrooms.
Just don't overlook the one stipulation from the announcement: (from memory) "...if the state reopening allows for road races..."

I really don’t think it will make any difference for me during the race. It will admittedly improve everything before the starting gun.
A lot of International runners won't take part.
I am -13 and was in for 2020 but will wait until 2022.The failure that is the EU won't have given 2 jabs to many by then so that will rule a few out,and with chances of the race not taking place,many others won't take the chance on losing flight money.
If they keep the same schedule of 4 waves, 8 corrals, 25 minutes between waves, it reduces crowding by a third. If they add waves, they can reduce crowding more. With 6 waves x 8, they reduce each corral form 1,000 to 500. They could block half the bus seats and make more bus trips.
Actually, I just came to say I'm 51:32 under, with a 2:58:28, age 62.
I was registered for the 2020 marathon based on a Spring 2019 race where I went -3 mins. In November, 2019, I ran a -17 min race (to qualify for 2021). Things change and it sucks that people who qualified for 2020 will miss the cut-off for 2021. I am just glad that I pushed myself to run that second marathon in 2019. Now, I need to figure out accommodations all over again...
So here's an interesting wrinkle I just thought about. What's the qualifying window for 2023 going to be? In normal times, if you run a BQ in October, you know you're good for the Boston Marathon a year and a half away (which is nice if you don't want to do back-to-back marathon cycles, race different distances in the next year, etc.).
I'm assuming that the qualifying window for 2022 will include the October Boston Marathon--so for people who requalify at Boston, will they have the option of registering for 2023 or do they have to register for 2022?
