You take 3.2 million. you give 1 million to the feds and 200k to your agent/coaches. You have 2 million. You might make 7% but it turns out you can only spend ~3.5%/year. If you take out 140k, you run the risk of running out of money because of sequence of returns risk. You also need to be reinvesint to keep up with inflation. Now 70k/year for life is nice. But it isn't exactly rolling in it. And nothing I have seen suggests anyone is getting 3 million dollar contracts.

That being said if some one offers you even like 500k, you have to think about it (handwaving about terms, length of contract, and so on). The future isn't promised for anyone. How much more money did a 17 year old Cain get versus what you would offer a 21 year old version? And yes any sprinter needs to think about if they are better off doing football. Making 20 million as a top 100 WR might be easier than making 20 million as a top 10 sprinter.

It is funny how people complain about how bad the HS/College system is until people skip it.:) There are problems with each route.

Yeah I agree he's not guaranteed to make it to the NFL and even if he does he won't get paid a crazy amount unless he is one of the best receivers in the League.You also have to love football enough to want permanent brain damage.I would not advise any athlete to choose football if the can go pro on another sport.

The number 100 wide receiver probably makes less than 3.2 million only 2-3 wide receiver make 20 million or more. Probably Julio Jones and Hopkins, quarter backs make the real money, also not even the top 100 NFL player(all positions out of 1600-1700 roster players) make 15 million.

He might end up making more than any us sprinter if he can break national records.Possibility more than 99% of NFL receivers if he gets to bolts level.

A quick count gets me 66 wide receivers (

) with guaranteed contracts of over 3.2 million. Want to make a bet between 2nd contracts, incentives, and unguaranteed money that 34 other guys have made well over 3.2 million?

If he becomes Usain Bolt level of fame, then yeah sprinting is the way to go to avoid the brain damage. But the drop off from him is extreme. Bolt is worth like 100million. Tyson gay is at 15 million. Michael Johnson is down at 8 million. Basically T&F will require you to be a top 10 all time sprinter to pay off versus being the 3rd wide receiver on a team.

I know nothing about his football skills and I am guessing that nobody can really tell him at 16 if he will be a #1 receiver in the league or an undrafted free agent getting a call in for a tryout.

Per year is what we are talking, Julio Jones gets paid 66 million but that's a 3 year contract. (Highest WR contract). People over estimate salaries because they assume a 2-4 year contract is what players make in a year.Now a top quarter back could make 30-45 million a year.

No we are talking about per contract. Nobody is paying a 16 year old sprinter 3.2 million (which I believe is a made up number and could probably only get there with incentives for things like gold medals and world rankings)/year to be a sprinter. 3.2 million to take a flier on a 16 year old over the next olympic cycle might be on the edge of believability especially if the guaranteed money was like 500k.

Obviously the important number is lifetime earnings. I feel pretty confidant that given the choice between being say the 5th best 200m runner in the world for a decade or being the 100th best wide receiver over the same time period, the receiver is going to end up with a lot more cash. You basically need to be the best sprinter in the world to make things work out.

Track pay is crap. Go watch the Nick Symonds video where he talks about his best earning years and races for a guy who was a consistant top 10 800m (granted always towards the middle/back) for a decade.
