I wonder if this will eventually turn into one of those "you had to be there" threads. Had I not been there in November 07, I'd probably say Rupp without a second thought.
However, I was there. There was just something unquantifiable, perhaps incommunicable, about Hall that day. Maybe that was the single peak day of his running career, maybe it was one of a handful of days that every runner has where everything just aligns, who knows. Watching that guy that day in Central Park, and I remember Sell saying the same thing in a post-race interview, he ran with a "Je ne sais quoi" (I'll be putting myself on time out after this post for using such a ridiculous cliche) to the point where I'm not sure any other human being would've beaten him on that course that day. Am I under even the most remote delusional he was the best marathoner in the world in November 2007? Not even close. But on that day, on that course, I don't think anyone who witnessed the run in person would find it far-fetched that he wasn't getting beaten by anyone that day.
Hall had at least three days like that in his career (Houston Half 2007, Trials 2007/08, and Boston 2011 (Tailwind). He believes that God carried him on those days and always hoped for similar "help" in races. I am a Hall fan but I have to ask is there any American that made two Olympic Teams and had more disappointing results?
I agree with the poster that said that Rupp would have stuck with Hall and pulled away over the last 5k.
I was at trials in 2007 because I had a friend running and I ran New York City Marathon the following day.
I had never seen anything quite like what Hall did between 15-26.2. He was running the hilly twisting course in Central Park in 4:30's-4:40's. When he saw Kannouchi in the jumbotron behind his pack of 4 as he passed 15 miles he opened it up. The last mile or two he had his hands up in the air most of the way with absolutely no concern about his pace and was still running fast. The last half despite waiting to take off at 15 was 1:02 low. He literally jogged the first 7 miles letting guys like Wardian go ahead of him. On paper it looks different of course.
Catching him in the last 5k? Not a chance that day. Rupp would have had to take it out from the gun to have beaten him. So I don't know but like KingAdRock said you had to be there. To me it looked like of he had wanted to in the last 5 miles he could have dropped it to 4:20's without a problem.
After watching him I was convinced he could have run whatever he wanted to run that day. A lot of you guys are just looking at his 2:09 thinking that Rupp could beat that. So could have Hall by a lot if he went early or pushed late even on that cr@ppy course .
