Of course it is. Had she done this training at age 30, she would have run 2:18.

Sara was awesome in high school and had a scholarship to Stanford. She didn’t just come out of nowhere. Most threads here would be about her underperforming all these years. Everything is finally coming together.
Of course it is. Another "late developer". She will be even faster at 40, right?

She was national champ in high school. Were you living in a cave? Her high school PRs were the same as Droddy. I guess she should be running about 2:10 by now.
To be a national schoolgirl champ is nowhere equivalent to being amongst the fastest marathon runners in the world. Performances on different planets.

Do you know what her training was at 30? Are you also aware that doping enables an athlete to train harder?
Marathoners peak in their mid 30s.
Shalane won NYC at age 36. Eliud Kipchoge ran his sub 2 at 34 or 35.
Sara is in her prime. She has about 1-2 years max left before age starts becoming a detriment.

The focus is on her since Ryan is retired. His coaching works for her. She has kids and is happy. She’s suited for the marathon and gets stronger after a cycle. She has has had minimal injuries. The shoes help a bit. She likes racing. Lots of reasons.
Pretty much this except that the “shoes help a bit” part should read “The shoes help a ton”. Not a diss - everyone has the shoes now and she still won (plus took second in London), but let’s be honest with ourselves. She clearly responds well to the shoes and they likely account for half of the 7 minutes she has dropped in the last 18 months or whatever. Still some impressive improvements beyond the shoe gains though.
Renato Canova says the shoes are only worth 30 seconds for an elite male in a half marathon.
Oh really? So who should be the 2nd fastest American ever if not a former national champion? Would you be happier if it was somebody who came out of nowhere? Do you think the footage was faked like the moon landing and she didn't really run 2:20? Live with it. Enjoy it. It is real. Too many LetsRun knuckleheads just can't enjoy good performances. If Americans perform poorly, you complain about how slow they are and you tell them what they are doing wrong and tell them to switch coaches. when they run fast, you question the performance.
Amazing.
How does she not get injured at that age running so many miles? Does she really do 110 a week? She looks so frail. How does she not get hurt?
However, she did run 70 miles a week back in high school and never got injured. She's just a unique one-in-a-million talent?

Not necessarily. Sinead Diver was improving at 41 when she ran 2:24:11 so Sara could have 3-4 more years before age becomes a factor.

as mentioned 37 isn't really old for the marathon-ie. Carlos Lopes, she has at least a few more years in her--no way that Kipchoge was born in '84- likely he was 22 or 23 when he won the 5000m in Paris in 2003....

Probably true. But that shoe discussion gets boring. Everybody can have them now, so it's a level playing field.
Completely agree.
Well, then you should wear them at your next marathon and see how much YOU improve. Fair question, no? It's not a spitefulchallenge friend, I'm a fellow Michiganian Griffin.
You don't run as fast as her, so you should surely improve at least as much, if not more. Let us know what you're aiming for when our great Governor decides to ease things up.
its not so much her improvement - its her recovery. Twice now she has run fantastic marathons, and then 10-12 weeks later - bettered them.
She must have been totally knackered at London, and then, what 11 weeks later she did that?
Simply unbelievable.
If she did that pane-aqua then something she is doing is a miracle and i want to know what it is.
If there is an argument in 2020 that these pbs are due to freshness due to less racing, then Sara with London and MP gives the total lie to that - its something else.

You can only assume that those other runners are also clean.

I don't dispute she ran 2.20. But that is a top international time - by a veteran - and not simply a national level performance. It isn't a given that a schoolgirl champion will reach that level. Being a good schoolgirl runner isn't a convincing argument that her performances today are clean.
When an athlete continues to get better from their youth to their late 30's - against the natural physical decline that should occur over that period - I see the obvious - and it isn't better training or shoes. The fact that it is now becoming quite common may only speak of the sheer pervasiveness of doping at the top of the sport.

Don't we say that about everybody now who records difficult-to-believe performances? The alternative may be banal but more likely - because they don't have to be "a one-in-a-million talent" - and that is that they dope. Simplest and statistically the most probable explanation.

2020 has been a year for such performances. And what do we know that's been different about testing this year? Because of the pandemic there's been much less of it.
Tooooooo the GIIIIILLLLLLLSSSSSSSS!!!
This thread should be reviewed and some posters banned. Are some of you so insecure and angry that you can't appreciate when good people achieve great things. Some of you sound like busy body neighbors who start rumors about people. Your neighbor has a new car; start whispering that he must be embezzling. He drives a female neighbor to work one day because her car is in the shop; they must be having an affair. His children are going to an Ivy; the must have paid their way in because they don't seem that smart. The kid is the starting QB at the HS; the parents must be bribing the coach. Sara Hall runs a great time; she must be doping. Did some of you grow up in a communist country?
If she was improving at the 1500 then her age would be a questionable factor. However it’s the thon where high end speed that you lose as you age has little to no factor.
Didn’t Meb win Boston at 38? A 43 year old Kenyan ran 2:08. A 42 year Abdi qualified for the Olympic team.
So it’s not suprising that a 37 year would run prs. Especially since she waited till her 30s to take up the event. It takes time to figure out the glycogen depletion component of a thon.
It’s almost like changing positions in a sport. Like a quarterback that was able to use their legs in their 20s to gain yards. However in their 30s they become more of a pocket passer because that speed isn’t there. But they can actually be more effective as a pocket passer if they can read defenses better. Look at how many old qbs win superbowls.
With age comes wisdom. Well at least for most.

Wow, you've got to be the most cynical, bitter, resentful and jealous poster on these entire boards. I'm sure you live alone, so unfortunately there's no one around to tell you what a complete failure you are at understanding the meaning of life. I mean you are really one messed up person. Sad and good luck with your decrepit life. Geez!
